EHS Easily Wins Opener At Vandalia Girls Tourney, Newton Advances At LIC

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School easily handled its opening round game at the Second Annual Vandalia Girls Mid-Winter Basketball Tournament.Monday.

The Hearts pounded Madison, 73-6. EHS ripped out to a 26-0 opening quarter lead as Saige Althoff scored six points and Madison Mapes and Bria Beals had five each.

In the second quarter, the Hearts had a 21-3 count to lead 47-3 at halftime.

Fourteen players scored for EHS led by Beals with 11 points, Alyssa Martin with 10 and Mapes and Althoff with nine each.

The second game went to Vandalia over Salem, 46-38. Greenville downed Centralia, 52-23. Mascoutah finished out with a 64-46 win over Trenton Wesclin.

The tournament continues Wednesday with Effingham against Vandalia at 6 p.m. followed by Mascoutah taking on Greenville at 7:30.

Thursday's schedule includes Salem against Madison at 6 followed by Centralia taking on Wesclin at 7:30. The finals are scheduled for Saturday.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton picked up a victory in the consolation semifinals at the Little Illini Conference Tournament Monday.

The tourney opened Saturday with four games and two games were contested Monday evening.

In the opener, Marshall won over Lawrenceville, no score was reported.

Newton then defeated Casey-Westfield, 43-23. The Eagles stepped out to a 10-2 opening quarter lead and led 22-8 at halftime.

Karasyn Martin led the way with eight points while Lilly Kessler added seven. Nine Eagles players scored in the contest.

Kessler led the way in rebounds with eight while Emma Nadler pulled down seven. K. Martin had five steals and Elley Bennett led in assists with four.

Newton improved to 10-11 on the season. The Eagles will play for the consolation championship Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Marshall. In the other contest, Lawrenceville meets Casey-Westfield at 6 for seventh place.

In tonight's games in the LIC Tourney in winner bracket action, Paris faces Mount Carmel at 6 p.m. followed by Richland County taking on Robinson at 7:30. The winners will advance to the championship game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while the losers will play for third place at 6 p.m.
