BROWNSTOWN -- The National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament got underway during the weekend.

In the opening contest, Altamont edged St. Elmo/Brownstown, 39-36.

SEB held an 8-7 opening quarter lead behind six points by C. Wollin.

Altamont came back with an 18-10 second quarter run to lead 25-18 but SEB had a 15-5 third quarter for a 33-30 lead. Once again Altamont came back, this time with a 9-3 run to pull out the three-point victory.

Calvin Bannister tallied 13 and Hayden Bridges 10 for the winners.

SEB was led by D. Willms with 15 and C. Wollin with 10.

In the second contest, Sigel St. Michael downed Neoga, 35-21. Mayer got the Sharpshooters off in the right direction, scoring 10 of his team's 12 opening quarter points. St. Michael led 19-11 at half and 27-17 going into the final quarter.

Brant Niebrugge and Mayer finished with 12 each while Bryce Niebrugge had 11 for the winners.

Neoga was led by Coy with 15.

Game three went to Dieterich over Windsor, 48-15.

In the fourth contest, Stewardson-Strasburg easily handled Altamont, 46-10. Stew-Stras led 27-2 at halftime.

Nine players scored in the contest for the winners led by W. Vonderheide with 13.

Altamont was led by Ashton Buchanan and Haydin Bridges with three each.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged North Clay, 49-44. North Clay held a 10-1 opening quarter lead but here came CHBC with a 22-7 run to lead 23-17 at halftime.

North Clay had a 10-6 third quarter but CHBC finished with a 20-17 final period. Three players hit double figures for the winners. Remington Howell and Ronnie Dilley scored 13 each while Griffin Vaughn tallied 12.

North Clay was led by Griffy with 18 and Schnepper with 15.

St. Michael edged Effingham Sacred Heart, 44-42 in game six.

The Sharpshooters held a 25-13 halftime lead. Sacred Heart came back with a 15-8 third quarter to pull wthin 33-28 and outscored St. Michael 14-11 in the final period only to fall two points short.

Brant Niebrugge led the way with 22 points while Alex Amyer added 11.

The Shamrocks were led by Traub with 14 and Warner with 11.

In the final game of the weekend, South Central downed Dieterich, 30-17. South Central held Dieterich scoreless in the opening quarter but went scoreless itself in the second period to lead only 13-9 at halftime. South Central then had a 17-8 second half.

The winners were led by Westin Nelson with 13 and Luke Shumate with 10.

Dieterich was led by Bryce Bohnhoff with eight.

The tournament continues today as Altamont faces North Clay at 6:15 p.m. and Sacred Heart  meets Dieterich at 7:30, both consolation bracket games.

The winner bracket games Tuesday will feature Stew-Stras against CHBC at 6:15 and St. Michael taking on South Central at 7:30.
