Bulldogs, Indians, Shoes, Cougars Win; Hearts Fall In Girls Basketball

Effingham St. Anthony, ranked eighth in the latest Class 1A state basketball poll, picked up a victory over Flora Saturday in girls basketball, 61-56.

Lucy Fearday got the Bulldogs off and running in the opening quarter by scoring 11 of the team's 25 points. She connected on four regular baskets and a three-pointer. Nancy Ruholl chipped in with eight ponts on a three-pointer, two regular baskets and a free throw.

The Wolves came back with an 18-12 second quarter run but still trailed 37-28 at halftime. St. Anthony had a 10-9 third quarter but the Wolves came back with a 19-14 final period to make the game more interesting as the Bulldogs finished with a five-point victory margin.

Fearday tallied 20 points with seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and was five of nine at the line. Ruholl added 15 and Stacie Vonderheide chipped in with 10.

At Mount Zion

Effingham dropped a 54-41 loss to Mount Zion in Apollo Conference action Saturday.

The Hearts trailed Mount Zion 13-10 after the opening quarter and 29-18 at halftime. Mount Zion had a 16-8 third quarter surge.

The Hearts had only one player in double digits. Ella Niebrugge led the way with 10 points on three field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line.

At Neoga

Neoga racked up another victim, this time Casey-Westfield by a 43-14 tally Saturday.

The Indians, ranked No. 5 in the Class 1A state basketball poll, put together a 17-3 opening quarter run and controlled the game the rest of the way.

Sydney Richards was the lone player for Neoga in double figures with 15 on six field goals that included two three-pointers.

Neoga is now 19-1 on the season and will travel to Pana tonight.

Casey-Westfield won the junior varsity game, 30-17.

At Breese

Teutopolis took part in the Paws Shootout at Breese Central High School and nabbed a 47-43 win over Rochester Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Rochester 12-10 after one quarter. Kaylee Niebrugge kept the Shoes going offensively, scoring seven of the 10 points.

T-town and Rochester were tied at 18-18 at halftime. T-town moved ahead with a 13-8 third period as Niebrugge scored six and Emily Konkel added a basket and two free throws.

Rochester came back with a 17-16 final quarter but couldn't make up that third quarter run by the Shoes.

Niebrugge tallied 21 points for the Shoes as the lone player in double figures. Niebrugge connected on seven field goals and seven of 10 at the line. She had a double-double with 12 rebounds and also led in assists with two.. Konkel contributed four steals.

South Central edged Shelbyville, 49-48 in Saturday action.

The Cougars held a 7-5 opening quarter lead as Brooklyn Garrett scored four points and Kaitlyn Swift added a three-pointer.

South Central went on a 20-12 second period run to lead 27-18 at halftime. Garrett added seven points while Swift led with eight on two three-pointers and two free throws.

The two teams played to a 9-9 third quarter and Shelbyville had a 22-13 final period run only to fall short.

South Central connected on 13 field goals, five of those three-pointers. Swift had four of the five three-pointers in the contestl.

Garrett led the way with 23 points while Swift added 14. South Central finished with 18 of 38 free throws while Shelbyville shot only six and made two.
