Neoga, Teutopolis Continue To Roll, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

NEOGA -- Listed as fifth in the latest Class 1A Girls State Basketball Poll, Neoga continued to roll with a 47-43 win over Fairfield Thursday evening.

The Indians trailed Fairfield 16-14 after the opening quarter and was still behind by one point at halftime, 25-24.

Neoga then went on an 18-10 third quarter run and held off the Mules in the final quarter for the victory.

Sydney Richards led the way for Neoga with 22 points on nine field goals and two of two at the line. Also in double digits was Haylee Campbell with 10. S. Richards and Allison Sampson connected on two three-pointers each.

Neoga improved to 18-1 on the season and will play host to Casey-Westfield in Saturday competition.

At Mattoon

Teutopolis, ranked fourth in Class 2A in the latest Girls State Basketball Poll, moved its record to 14-2 on the season with a 60-57 overtime win over Mattoon Thursday evening.

The Green Wave took a 15-13 opening quarter lead and led 34-22 at halftime.

The Wooden Shoes had a 14-6 third quarter as Kaylee Niebrugge scored half of their points and T-town pulled within 40-36 going into the final period.

T-town continued its run with a 15-11 final period as Molly Ruholl went on a three-point tear, connecting on three for nine points and the Wooden Shoes tied the score at 51-51, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Konkel hit six of six free throws and Niebrugge a basket and a free throw as the Shoes outscored Mattoon 9-6 for the win.

Niebrugge finished with 19 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer and two of four at the line, while Konkel added 17 on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and eight of 10 at the line. Also in double figures was Ruholl with 15 on five three-pointers.

Niebrugge pulled down 12 rebounds while Konkel had seven. Courtney Gibson and Niebrugge had two steals each. Niebrugge had two assists.

Brownstown/St. Elmo had an easy time Thursday evening and downed Mount Olive,  58-20.

BSE tore out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead as Avery Myers scored five points and Jayna Ireland four.

The Bombers then had a 20-6 second period run to lead 35-10 at halftime and held Mount Olive to only 10 points in the second half.

Ireland tallied 16 points on eight field goals while Lexi Seabaugh finished with 13.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham was a 22-15 winner over BSE. K. Armstrong led EHS with seven points while H. Thompson had six. BSE was led by Wilhour with five.

Dieterich pounded Ramsey to the tune of 44-14 in action Thursday evening.

The Movin' Maroons took off to a 14-5 opening quarter lead as Miley Britton scored eight points and Courtney Brummer added four.

Dieterich had an 11-1 second period to lead 25-6 at halftime. Brittney Niemerg tallied five in the quarter.

Dieterich then had a 19-8 second half.

Niemerg finished with 12 points while Britton added 10.

Dieterich also claimed the junior varsity contest, 22-17. Callie Faller led with eight points.

Newton ripped out to a 19-9 opening quarter lead and went on for a 61-24 victory over Lawrenceville Thursday.

The Eagles led 29-14 at halftime and had a 24-7 third quarter surge.

Lilly Kessler was the lone Eagles player in double figures with 15. She connected on six field goals and was three of five at the line. Elley Bennett added nine points.

Kessler also led in rebounds with 12. Camryn Martin led in assists with six and steals with four.

Newton improves to 9-9 overall and 1-2 in the Little Illini Conference. The Eagles will travel to Mount Carmel Monday night.

The Eagles also claimed the junior varsity contest, 23-13. Izzy Meinhart led the winners with eight points. The Eagles JV is now 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the LIC.

The Maroons held a 16-10 opening quarter lead and led 37-15 at halftime.

The Pirates had one player in double figures. Katelyn Shoemaker tallied 12 points on six field goals.
