Altamont Beats S.C., St. Anthony Trounces S'ville

FARINA -- Altamont High School is coming together after an injury ended the season for leading scorer Grace Nelson.

The Indians trailed South Central after the opening quarter but got untracked to take a 66-48 National Trail Conference win in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

Taegan Webster got the Cougars off to a 16-14 lead by scoring seven points and Brooklyn Garrett added five.

But here came the Indians. Claire Boehm led the way in the opening quarter with seven points but it was a total team effort in the second period as seven players scored. Peyton Osteen hit a three-pointer and a free throw while Bri Grunloh and Boehm added four points each and the Indians moved ahead 32-28.

Altamont really got rolling in the third quarter with an 18-5 run to lead 50-33 and finished out with a 16-15 final quarter.

Boehm led the way for Altamont with 19 points while P. Osteen finished with 12.

South Central was led by Garrett with 20 and Webster with 13.

South Central won the junior varsity contest, 37-33 in overtime.

At Shelbyville

Effingham St. Anthony got on a roll and handed Shelbyville an 82-39 loss in Thursday evening action.

The Bulldogs ripped out to a 27-6 opening quarter lead as Stacie Vonderheide scored eight points while Nancy Ruholl and Lucy Fearday added six each.

Vonderheide continued her hot scoring with 10 points in the second quarter for 18 by halftime. Fearday added on six more points.

The scoring cooled down in the third quarter with a 16-12 run to lead 68-27 going into the final period.

Four players hit double digits for the Bulldogs. Vonderheide led the way with 24 points on 12 field goals. Fearday chipped in with 22 on eight field goals and six of eight at the line. Anna Faber added 17 points while Ruholl tallied 12.

St. Anthony improved to 15-4 on the season and was listed eighth in the latest Associated Press Class 1A State Girls Basketball Poll.
