St. A Girls Fifth, Altamont Eighth at Mattoon; N. Clay to Play For Third At CORL Tourney

MATTOON -- Effingham St. Anthony claimed fifth place at the Mattoon Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Bulldogs downed Richland County 69-56.

St. Anthony took a 38-21 halftime lead and then had to hold off Richland County as the Tigers had a 35-31 second half.

Anna Faber got the Bulldogs on an opening quarter roll with eight points while Stacie Vonderheide had five. Faber added a three-pointer and a regular basket in the second quarter as did Vonderheide and Lucy  Fearday.

Fearday then took over in the third quarter, scoring 10 of the Bulldogs 12 points. Fearday continued on in the final quarter, scoring nine points while Nancy Ruholl added seven of her 11 total points in the period.

Four players hit double figures for the Bulldogs. Fearday led the way with 28 points and earned All-Tournament honors. Anna Faber and Vonderheide finished with 13 each while Ruholl added 11.

Sullivan edged Altamont, 61-58 to claim the seventh place contest.

The Indians held the lead throughout the opening three quarters before Sullivan came back with a 20-7 final quarter run to pull out the victory.

Altamont led 19-17 after one period. The score was tied at 31-31 at halftime. Altamont moved ahead 51-41 in the third quarter on Claire Boehm's 10 points.

But Sullivan had five players score in the final quarter and put together the 20-7 margin.

Altamont was led by Boehm with 15 points on five field goals and five of eight at the line. Peyton Osteen chipped in with 13 points behind three three-pointers.

At Centralia

North Clay (Louisville) lost in its bid to play for the Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Winterfest Girls Basketball Tourney championship.

The Cardinals fell to Father McGivney by a 54-41 count Thursday.

North Clay is now 9-5 on the season and will play for third place today against Hamilton County at 6:30 p.m.

In other scores Thursday, Chester won over Anna-Jonesboro 46-42, Vandalia downed Trenton Wesclin 72-65, Pinckneyville beat Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 55-24, Greenville won over Johnston City 43-39 and Staunton beat Hamilton County 46-38.

Staunton will face Father McGivney at 8 p.m. for the championship. Chester takes on Vandalia at 3 p.m for the consolation championship and Pinckneyville will meet Greenville at 4:30 p.m. for fifth place.
