WSS Finishes Second At Tri-County, C'land Takes Fifth at Vandalia

KANSAS -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fell to Lawrenceville, 50-45 in the championship game of the Tri-County Boys Basketball Tournament but finished second.

The Hatchets took the early lead 14-11 after one quarter and 24-21 at halftime. Lawrenceville came back with a 17-9 third period run and that was the game as both teams played to a 12-12 final quarter.

Austin Wittenberg led the way for the Hatchets with 26 points on eight field goals that included three three-pointers, and was seven of eight at the line. Also in double figures was Jackson Gurgel with 12 points on four three-pointers. 

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg is now 13-3 on the season.

In the third place contest, Paris won over Martinsville 65-38. Westville edged Tri-County 45-42 for fifth place and  Chrisman finished seventh on a forfeit by DeLand Weldon.

At Vandalia

Cumberland, the lone area team at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, captured fifth place with a 53-39 win over Okaw Valley Thursday.

The Pirates's Gavin Hendrix finished with 21 points to lead the way. Hendrix got Cumberland off in the right direction in the opening quarter with six points as the Pirates led 14-8. Bryant Weber and Garrett McElravy knocked in a three-pointer each in the second quarter 10-9 edge for a 24-17 halftime lead.

Okaw Valley came back with a 17-10 third period to tie the score at 34-34.

Cumberland found the range again and hit its free throws for a 19-5 run in the fourth quarter and the victory.

Hendrix finished with nine field goals and three of four at the free throw line. Also in double figures was Weber with three field goals, that included two three-pointers, and two of two at the line for 10 points.
