Altamont Captures Sesser-Valier Championship

Altamont captured the championship of the Sesser-Valier Tournament.
SESSER -- Altamont High School is the champion of the Sesser-Valier Boys Basketball Holiday Tournament.
The Indians claimed a 57-40 victory over Goreville for the championship Thursday evening.
Altamont didn't wait but stepped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead on Goreville. Avery Jahraus knocked in a three pointer and two free throws for five points while Wyatt Phillips added a three-pointer.
The Indians kept the pressure on with a 13-10 second period to lead 26-17 at halftime. Logan Cornett contributed two baskets while five other players scored.
Altamont then had a 17-13 third period as Jahraus hit another three-pointer and two free throws and Cornett put in three baskets for six points.
The Indians never relented and finished out with a 14-10 final period as Phillips tallied seven points.
"What a championship game," said Altamont Coach John Niebrugge. "So proud of our boys effort and execution with the victory over a program like Goreville. Defense was on point."
Jahraus finished with 12 points to lead the Indians while Cornett and Phillips added 10 points each.
Only one player scored in double figures for the Blackcats with 13 while eight other players were held to five points and under.
Named to the All-Tournament Team for the Indians were Avery Jahraus, Mason Robinson and Wyatt Phillips.
In the third place contest, Sparta won over DuQuoin 65-58. The fifth place game went to Red Bud over Johnston City 56-55 and the consolation championship was claimed by Marissa-Coulterville over Waltonville 53-46.
