T-town To Play For Christmas Classic Title

Teutopolis High School claimed two victories in action Thursday at the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Boys Basketball Classic and advanced to the championship game.

The Wooden Shoes defeated Chicago Brooks 53-34 in their first game. 

T-town edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead then went on a 19-10 second period to lead 28-17 at halftime. The Shoes had a 25-17 second half.

Three players hit double figures for the Shoes. James Niebrugge led the way with 15 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. Niebrugge connected on six of eight from the field and three of five at the free throw line.

Also in double figures were Garrett Gaddis and Caleb Siemer with 13 each. Siemer also had nine rebounds.

Teutopolis then edged Effingham St. Anthony, 50-46.

The opening quarter was the game winner as the Shoes took a 16-12 lead. From that point on, both teams played even as the two squads scored nine each in the second and third quarters and 16 each in the final period.

Siemer led the way with 14 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and was one of two at the line. He connected on six of 10 field goals. Siemer also led in rebounds with 10. Brendan Niebrugge finished in double figures with 11. James Niebrugge pulled down nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs did not have a player in double figures. Griffin Sehy and Ryan Schmidt scored nine points each. Sehy led in rebounds with five.

St. Anthony handed Oak Lawn a 54-44 loss to advance to face Teutopolis.

The two squads played to an 8-8 opening quarter tie before St. Anthony took a 24-14 halftime lead. Oak Lawn came back with a 24-14 third quarter run to tie the score at 38-38 going into the final quarter. St. Anthony then put together a 16-6 run for the 10-point victory.

Collin Westendorf led the way for the Bulldogs with 15 points on five field goals, one from three-point range, and five of eight at the line. Brock Fearday added 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Effingham fell in a tough overtime contest against Pleasant Plains, 73-72.

Pleasant Plains took a 19-8 opening quarter lead but Effingham came back with a 27-11 second period to lead 35-30. Pleasant Plains then had an 18-12 third quarter to lead 48-47. The Hearts then had a 16-15 run to knot the score, sending the contest into overtime. Pleasant Plains then clamied the one-point victory.

Effinghan was led by Garrett Wolfe with 21 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer and four of four at the line. Andrew Splechter chipped in with 17 while Logan Heil and Andrew Donaldson with 11 points each.

The Hearts then faced Champaign Centennial and fell 49-44.

Centennial took the early lead at 13-5 but the Hearts tied at halftime, 17-17. EHS moved ahead 33-30 going into the final period. Centennial came roaring back with a 19-11 run for the five-point win.

EHS had three players in double digits. Wolfe led the way again with 13 points while Donaldson added 12 and Heil 10.

Newton split victories on the day. The Eagles fell to Mattoon 59-47.

Three players scored in double digits for the Eagles. Parker Wolf led with 16 while Caden Nichols added 12 and Dylan Gier had 10.

In the second contest of the day for Newton, the Eagles downed Knoxville, 52-38.

Newton trailed after the opening quarter but came back to lead 24-20 at halftime then had a 22-10 third quarter surge.

Gier led Newton with 23 points on 10 of 12 from the field and three of four at the line. Nichols added 13.

Other scores Thursday were Lutheran North 66, Belvidere 55; Charleston 60, Dixon 55; Lutheran North 77, Charleston 62; Chicago Brooks 57, Oak Lawn 53; Highland 47, Knoxville 36; Lincoln Way East 53, Champaign Centennial 44; Highland 53, Mattoon 51; Lincoln Way East 65, Pleasant Plains 31 and Dixon 50, Belvidere 28.

Newton will play Dixon at 11:30 a.m. for 13th place in the EHS Auxiliary Gym. Effingham meets Oak Lawn at 11:30 a.m. for seventh place in the EHS Main Gym. St. Anthony squares off against Pleasant Plains at 6 p.m. for third place and Teutopolis faces Lincoln Way at 7:30 for the championship.
