St. A, EHS, Teutopolis Win Openers at Boys Christmas Classic

St. Anthony, Effingham and Teutopolis were all opening round winners at the Effingam/Teutopolis Boys Basketball Christmas Classic Wednesday.

The Bulldogs took on Luther North and claimed a 55-49 victory.

St. Anthony edged out to an 8-5 opening quarter lead in a slow scoring first quarter. Both teams got unwound in the second period and Lutheran North moved into a 23-19 halftime lead.

St. Anthony came back with a 14-12 run to trail only 35-33 going into the final quarter. From there the Bulldogs got on track and whipped out a 22-14 scoring margin to win.

In that final quarter, Max Koenig scored nine points while Brock Fearday added seven.

Fearday finished with19 points on seven field goals that included two three-pointers and was three of three at the line. Koenig added 14 points.

Teutopolis then handed Charleston a 75-50 loss with a big scoring first quarter.

The Wooden Shoes went on a 23-9 opening quarter tear as seven players scored. Brendan Niebrugge led the way with two three-pointers while Logan Roepke chipped in with five points.

T-town cooled way down in the second quarter as Charleston had a 12-9 lead but T-town held a 32-21 halftime tally. T-town got back on track with a 21 third quarter as Caleb Siemer knocked in three baskets and two free throws for eight points while Garrett Gaddis chipped in with two three-pointers.

The Shoes finished with a strong 22-14 final quarter.

Siemer led the way for T-town with 17 points on six baskets and five of five from the free throw line. B. Niebrugge scored 13 points with three trifectas and two regular baskets while Gaddis added 10. B. Niebrugge had six assists while Siemer had seven rebounds.

Effingham played the final game of the night and scored a 53-42 win over Highland.

Highland held a 12-10 opening quarter lead but the Hearts came back with a 17-11 second period run to lead 27-23 at halftime. Garrett Wolfe tallied nine points while Spencer Fox scored six in the period.

The Hearts continued the hot streak in the third quarter with a 15-6 run  as Andrew Donaldson knocked in two three-pointers and Wolfe was four of four from the free throw line.

Wolfe finished with 21 points on six field goals and seven of 10 free throws. Also in double figures was Andrew Splechter with 10.

In other games, Oak Lawn won over Belvidere 61-44, Chicago Brooks downed Dixon 66-56, Lincoln Way East won over Mattoon 86-51, Champaign Centennial defeated Newton 48-34 and Pleasant Plains won over Knoxville 55-39.

The tournament continues today and will finish out Friday.
