Shoes Win CHS Girls Tourney, Hearts Second; Bulldogs To Play For Fifth at Mattoon

CHARLESTON -- Teutopolis High School finished with a 5-0 record at the Charleston Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament and claimed the championship Wednesday.

The Wooden Shoes trounced Jacksonville 64-14 to pick up win No. 4. T-town whipped out to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Emily Konkel led the way for the Shoes in scoring with 19 points on seven field goals, one a three-point basket, and four of four at the line. Also in double figures was Kaylee Niebrugge with 14.

Chloe Probst and Malea Helmink pulled down five rebounds each. Konkel and Niebrugge led in steals with three each. Konkel had five assists.

T-town then held off Tri-County for a 42-40 victory. The two teams played to a 6-6 opening quarter tie. The Shoes then ripped off a 16-5 second period to lead 22-11 at halftime. T-town still maintained control in the third quarter with a 15-14 run to lead 37-25 going into the final quarter.

Tri-County got on a roll and outscored the Shoes 15-5 but fell two points short.

Niebrugge led the Shoes with 19 points on four field goals and 11 of 15 at the line. Konkel added 14 points. Konkel pulled down 10 rebounds while Courtney Gibson added six. Konkel had three steals and two assists. Niebrugge added two assists.

Effingham finished second with a 4-1 mark after trouncing Danville 49-7.

The Hearts held Danville scoreless through the first half while taking a 30-0 lead. EHS had a 14-5 third quarter.

No one on the EHS squad finished in double figures. Saige Althoff and Bria Beals led the way with eight points each as 11 players contributed points in the contest.

Finishing third was Tri-County with a 3-2 record followed by Jacksonville 2-3, Danville 1-4 and Charleston 0-5.

Other scores Wednesday were Danville 61, Charleston 39 and Tri-County 67, Charleston 7.

At Mattoon

Effingham St. Anthony will be playing for fifth place in the 43rd Annual Mattoon Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament after falling to Galesburg 65-38 Wednesday but downing Altamont 61-29.

In the Galesburg victory, St. Anthony trailed 12-10 after the opening quarter and 29-16 at halftime. Galesburg continued its run with a 36-22 second half.

The Bulldogs were led by Lucy Fearday with 14 points while Nancy Ruholl and Anna Faber tallied nine each.

St. Anthony then captured a 61-29 win over Altamont.

The Bulldogs held a 24-7 opening quarter lead as Fearday and Stacie Vonderheide scored eight points each.

St. Anthony led 44-19 at halftime. Vonderheide and Fearday added eight more points to both score 16 by halftime.

Fearday finished with 23 in the contest, connecting on seven field goals and nine of 11 at the line. Vonderheide added 18 and Ruholl 14.

Altamont was led by Claire Boehm with 11 on four field goals that included two three-pointers and one of two at the line.

The Indians are playing without Grace Nelson who was injured and may be out for the season.

Altamont fell to Richland County by a 66-43 count. Richland County took an 18-8 opening quarter lead and led 31-22 at halftime. The squad then had a 22-10 third quarter run on the Indians.

Kylie Osteen led the way for Altamont with 10 points while P. Osteen added eight.

In other games Wednesday, Champaign Central won over Sullivan 47-29, Mahomet-Seymour downed Mattoon 49-45, Richland County beat Sullivan 74-55, Mahomet-Seymour won over Champaign Central 43-25 and Galesburg edged Mattoon 45-41.

Today's games feature Altamont against Sullivan at 3 p.m. for seventh place, St. Anthony meeting Richland County at 4:30 for fifth place, Champaign Central taking on Mattoon at 6 p.m. for third place and Mahomet-Seymour facing Galesburg at 7:30 for the championship.
