South Central Wins Dieterich Boys Tourney, Altamont To Play For Title Game at Sesser-Valier

DIETERICH -- South Central won the championship of the Dieterich Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

The Cougars beat host Dieterich 55-46. The Movn' Maroons took the early 12-8 lead before South Central came roaring back with a 19-9 second quarter and never looked back in the win.

Aidan Dodson scored 26 points to lead the way for South Central. Dodson hit five two-pointers, three trifectas and was seven of 12 at the line. Ethan Watwood chipped in with 11. The Cougars were 14 of 21 from the free throw line.

Dieterich was led by Lucas Westendorf with 22 points on nine field goals, two three-pointers and two of two at the line. Caleb Gephart added 12 points.

Arcola captured third place with an 80-68 win over Grayville.

Fifth place went to Sullivan over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 43-42.

Sullivan held a one point lead at halftime 27-26. The Bobcats tied the score in the third quarter at 34-34. Sullivan then came back in the final quarter with a 9-8 edge to pull out the one-point win.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City had one player in double figures. Kaidyn Calame tallied 11 points on three field goals, two of those from three-point range, and three free throws.

Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville downed Red Hill (Bridgeport) 70-68 for seventh place.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Ty'zae Rowland (Grayville), Aidan Dodson (South Central), Caleb Gephart (Dieterich), Lucas Westendorf (Dieterich), Brett Bushue (Sullivan), Anthony Buonaura (South Central), Jackson Miller (Arcola), AJ Radloff (Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City), Ethan Watwood (South Central) and Ozzy Ash (Red Hill).

At Sesser

Altamont will be playing for the championship of the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament after downing DuQuoin 72-57 Wednesday.

The Indians took possession of the contest early with a 23-13 opening quarter behind Mason Robnson's eight points and Kienon Eirhart and Eric Kollmann with four each.

Altamont led 40-20 at halftime as Logan Cornett knocked in two three-pointers.

The Indians went on a free throw binge in the third period, hitting 11 of 12. Wyatt Phillips nailed two baskets, one from three-point range, and was three of four at the line. Jared Hammer contributed five points hitting a field goal and three of three at the line. Altamont finished with 11 of 12 from the gratis stripe.

Altamont had three players connect for double digits. Phililps led the way with 15 points on two regular field goals, two three-pointers and five of eight at the line. Eirhart chipped in with 12 as he hit three baskets and was six of six at the line. Robinson added 11. Avery Jahraus, Cornett and Kollmann tallied eight points each. Altamont connected on 25 of 33 free throws.

The Indians will now face Goreville, a 68-67 winner over Sparta, for the championship at 7 p.m. today. 

Other scores Wednesday were Marissa-Coulterville 53, Thompsonville 26, Red Bud 65, Christopher 45, Waltonville 72, Sesser-Valier 44 and Johnston City 65, New Athens 55.

Sparta will take on DuQuoin for third place at 3 p.m. Red Bud plays Johnston City at 1:30 p.m. for fifth place. Marissa-Coulterville meets Waltonville at noon for the consolation championship.
