WSS To Play For Title At Tri-County, C'land Set For Fifth Place at Vandalia; Neoga Finishes Seventh At Monticello

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg will be playing for the championship of the Tri-County Boys Basketball Tournament after claiming two victories Wednesday.

The Hatchets downed Martinsville, 64-41. WSS ran off to a 21-8 opening quarter lead and led 41-21 at halftime.

Austin Wittenberg led the way for the Hatchets with 24 points on nine field goals, three from trifecta land, and three of three at the line. Jackson Gurgel added 13 while Dylan Curry finished with 12.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then edged Westville 46-43. Westville ran out to a 12-2 opening quarter lead but WSS came back with a 19-12 second quarter to trail by three at halftime.

The Hatchets took the lead in the third quarter with a 13-7 rally and led 34-31 going into the final quarter. The two teams played to a 12-12 tie and WSS won by three points.

A. Wittenberg led the way with 13 points while Nathaniel Gracey added 11 and Gurgel tallied 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras is now 13-2 on the season and will face Lawrenceville for the championship today at 7:30 p.m.

In other games Wednesday, Westville won a forfeit over Deland-Weldon, Tri-County beat Chrisman 50-43, Lawrenceville downed Paris 50-35, Martinsville won a forfeit over Deland-Weldon, Lawrenceville trounced Chrisman 72-30 and Paris beat Tri-County 50-43.

Martinsville will meet Paris at 6 p.m. for third place while Westville takes on Tri-County at 4:30 for fifth place and Chrisman wins the seventh place game over Deland-Weldon by forfeit.

At Vandalia

Cumberland downed Meridian 44-40 at the 50th Annual FNB Community Bank Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

Gavin Hendrix got the Pirates started in the right direction by scoring all nine of his team's points in the opening quarter as the Pirates held a 9-5 lead.

Cumberland then had an 11-10 second period to lead 19-15 at halftime. Meridian came back with a 12-8 third quarter to tie the score at 27-27.

Hendrix then tallied seven points in the final period while Blake McMechan and Trevin Magee added four each and the Pirates held off the challenge for the four-point victory.

Hendrix finished with 23 points on eight field goals that included two three-pointers, and was a perfect five of five at the line. Also in double figures was Garrett McElravy with 10.

Cumberland will meet Okaw Valley at 3 p.m. for fifth place.

In other games Wednesday, Okaw Valley edged Pana 64-63, Greenville won over Pana 57-35, Vandalia downed Meridian 66-42, Nokomis edged Shelbyville 29-28 and Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran defeated Flora 48-38.

CORL will meet Nokomis at 8 p.m. for the championship. Flora will take on Greenville at 6:30 p.m. for third place. Vandalia meets Shelbyville at 3:30 for seventh place and Macon Meridian and Pana square off at 2 p.m. for ninth place.

At Monticello

Neoga captured seventh place at the Monticello Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

The Indians downed Ridgeview 44-35. Neoga edged out to a 15-10 opening quarter lead and held a 26-21 halftime lead as Brady Reynolds knocked in two three-pointers while Landon Titus had his second three-pointer.

Neoga then had a 10-8 third period as Titus added to his three-point total with two more. The Indians finished with an 8-6 final period.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Titus, Reynolds and Quintin Richards led the way with 12 points each. Titus hit four three-pointers while Richards tallied five regular field goals and was two of two at the line. Reynolds hit two regular baskets and two three-pointers

Tuscola beat Monticello 42-32 for the championship. Third place went to Clinton over Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley 57-37 and Oakwood won fifth place over Paxton-Buckley-Loda 61-48.
