Altamont Advances at Sesser-Valier, C'land Splits at Vandalia, Neoga Drops Loss at Monticello, WSS Wins Forfeit at Tri-County

SESSER -- Altamont High School continued its run in the Sesser-Valier Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory over Johnston City, 54-51 Tuesday evening.

The Indians trailed Johnston City 16-11 after the opening quarter but came back with a strong second period to lead 29-24 at halftime. Mason Robinson got the run going in the quarter with three baskets that included one three-pointer and was two of two at the line for nine points.

Johnston City came back within two points 41-39 going into the final quarter but Altamont had a 13-12 edge for the three-point win.

Robinson finished as the lone player for Altamont in double figures with 20 on seven field goals, two three-pointers and four of four at the line. Wyatt Phillips was on the verge of double figures with nine points.

Other scores Tuesday were Thompsonville 53, Cobden 50; Goreville 60, Red Bud 51; Marissa-Coulterville 41, Zeigler-Royalton 28; Sparta 70, Christopher 63; Waltonville 74, Century 35; Sesser-Valier 74, Elverado 33 and DuQuoin 68, New Athens 39.

Today's games in the winner bracket will feature Goreville against Sparta at 1:30 p.m. and Altamont facing DuQuoin at 8 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Thursday while the losers will play for third place.

In the consolation bracket, Thompsonville takes on Marissa-Coulterville at 10:30 followed by Waltonville meeting Sesser-Valier at 5. The winners advance to the consolation championship Thursday. Red Bud meets Christopher at noon and Johnston City faces New Athens at 6:30 with the winners advancing to the fifth place game Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

At Monticello

The finals are set at the Monticello Holiday Tournament after Tuesday action.

Unfortunately, Neoga fell twice Tuesday. Paxton-Buckley-Loda defeated Neoga, 49-38.

Neoga then fell to Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley, 54-45.

In other games, Tuscola won over GCMS 52-46, Oakwood edged Ridgeview 51-48, Monticello downed Clinton 65-43 and Tuscola won over Paxton-Buckley-Loda 49-12.

Today's finals include Neoga against Ridgeview at 10 a.m. for seventh place, Paxton-Buckley-Loda facing Oakwood at 11:30 for fifth place, GCMS meeting Clinton at 3:30 for third place and Tuscola and Monticello squaring off for the championship at 7:30.

 

At Vandalia

Day two of the 50th Annual FND Community Bank Vandalia Holiday Tournament saw Cumberland pick up a victory and suffer a loss as the lone area team in the meet.

In the morning session, Cumberland won over Vandalia 49-44. The Pirates moved ahead 14-8 after the opening quarter and 26-18 at halftime. Gavin Hendrix scored six in the second half on a basket and four of four at the line.

In the third quarter, Vandalia came back with an 11-9 third quarter run and a final 15-14 fourth quarter but Cumberland maintained control for the win.

Hendrix finished wth 19 points on five field goals and nine of 11 at the line while Trevin Magee scored 11.

The Pirates then faced Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran and fell 51-39.

CORL led 28-15  at halftime. Cumberland came back with a 24-23 second half, but couldn't make up that first half deficit.

The Pirates had two players hit double figures. Hendrix led the way with 17 points on seven field goals and two of six at the line. He hit one three-pointer. Magee added 12 points with three trifectas and a regular basket and one free throw.

Other scores were Nokomis 44, Greenville 33; Flora 49, Meridian 33; Okaw Valley 50, Shelyville 47; Nokomis 54, Pana 52 and Flora 49, Vandalia 42.

Cumberland will meet Meridian at 12:30 p.m. today for its lone game. The finals are scheduled for Thursday.

At Tri-County

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, the lone area team in the Tri-County Tournament, had a game but didn't have to play Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets won on a forfeit over Deland-Weldon.

In other games, Martinsville 29, Westville 26; Lawrenceville 66, Tri-County 43 and Paris 60, Chrisman 27.

The Hatchets will face Martinsville at 10:30 a.m. today and take on Westville at 4:30 p.m. The finals are scheduled for Thursday.
