EHS Falls, St. A, Altamont, Neoga, Teutopolis Nab Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham High School ran into a buzzsaw Friday evening and fell to Lincoln, 83-46 in Apollo Conference girls basketball action.

The Railers stepped out to a 29-12 opening quarter lead and led 47-17 at halftime. The Hearts played close in the third quarter as Lincoln had a 25-20 edge.

Lincoln had five players finish in double figures. Kloe Froebe led the way with 29 points while Makinley Knapp had 27, Becca Heitzing 12, Jenna Bowman 10 and Tori Geriets 10. The Railers are the leaders in the Apollo Conference with a 5-0 record and stand at 13-0 overall.

The Railers connected on 10 of 12 from three-point range. Froebe hit four and Clark added three.

The Hearts had one player in double figures. Ella Niebrugge tallied 10. EHS dropped to 3-2 in the Apollo Conference and 9-3 overall. EHS connected on eight three-pointers as Niebrugge and Beals had three each.

EHS doesn't have a game this week and won't be back in action until Monday, December 26 in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. EHS will meet Tri-County at 3 p.m. and Jacksonville at 6 p.m.

Coach Jeff Schafer is one win away from breaking the most coaching victories at EHS. He and former coach Jim Maxedon are tied at 458 wins.

At Arthur

Effingham St. Anthony traveled to Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond and downed the homestanders, 66-39 Saturday.

Lucy Fearday went on a 10-point run in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs took a 23-6 lead. The Bulldogs led 40-21 at halftime and 58-32 going into the final quarter.

Fearday led the way with 24 points on 10 field goals and four of six at the line while Nancy Ruholl and Stacie Vonderheide added 17 each. Vonderheide scored 13 of the Bulldogs 17 points in the third quarter while Ruholl had eight of her points in the third period.

St. Anthony also captured the junior varsity game, 31-24.

Lily Gannaway led the winners with nine points.

At Altamont

Altamont easily handled Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 68-33 in Friday action.

The Indians edged out to a 19-11 opening quarter lead and led 38-18 at halftime. 

Grace Nelson scored four baskets in the opening quarter for eight points while Skylie Klein hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five.

Nelson continued on with six points in the second quarter and Klein knocked in another three-pointer.

Nelson finished with 24 points for the winners, connecting on 10 field goals, one from three-pointer range, and three of five at the line. Also in double figures was Klein with 11 as she had four field goals, three from three-point range.

At Neoga

Neoga took the early lead and went on for a 53-44 non-conference win over Newton Saturday.

The Indians led 30-27 at halftime and Newton pulled within 42-41 going into the final quarter but Neoga had an 11-3 run for the victory.

Neoga was led by Sydney Richards with 23 points on nine field goals and five of five at the line. Brynn Richards chipped in with 11 points while Allison Sampson added 10. The Indians remained unbeaten with a 12-0 record.

Camryn Martin led the Eagles with 15 points while Addy O'Dell chipped in with nine. Lilly Kessler led in rebounds with six. Elley Bennett and Karasyn Martin led in assists with three each. C. Martin had six steals. Newton dropped to 5-8 on the season.

Newton claimed the junior varsity win, 24-15. Martin led the winners with nine points. Newton improved to 8-2.

At Neoga

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis played host to Olney and sent the Tigers home with a 55-45 loss Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 20-7 opening quarter lead and led 37-18 at halftime. Olney mounted a comeback with a 27-18 second half but the Shoes first half was the difference.

Kaylee Niebrugge led in scoring with 26 points. She tallied 10 in the opening quarter and finished with eight of 11 from the field and nine field goals. Niebrugge also led in rebounds with eight.

Mollie Ruholl also finished in double figures with 13 on three of four field goals from three-point range and two of two at the line.

Summer Wall and Chloe Probst had three steals each. Courtney Gibson and Mollie Ruholl had one assist each. T-town hit six three-pointers as Ruholl knocked in three and Gibson added two.

Olney hit 10 three-pointers, four from Kerstin Weiler with four and Kenibe Boldt with three.

At Teutopolis
