North Clay Claims Conrad Allen Boys Tourney Title, Fleener Reaches 1,000th Point

WAYNE CITY -- North Clay (Louisville) had a lot going on at the Conrad Allen Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament during the weekend.

The Cardinals finished strong, taking a 67-58 win over Cisne Friday and  then edging Wayne City, 52-42 for the championship Saturday.

In the semifinal Friday, North Clay trailed Cisne 28-25 at halftime and was still behind by three, 46-43, going into the final quarter.

That's when North Clay's Logan Fleener got on a roll. Fleener had scored 15 through the first three quarters but broke loose with six baskets, that included a three-pointer, for 13 of his team's 24 points. Also rolling along was Alex Boose with seven points. The Cardinals had a 24-12 run and pulled out the victory by nine points.

Fleener, the son of Justin and Susan Fleener, scored his 1,000th career point in the win and finished with 29 points. He connected on 13 field goals, one a three-pointer, and was two of two at the line. His mother Susan is also a member of the 1,000 point club at North Clay.

Also in double figures was Boose with 16 on five field goals, that included three trifectas, and thee of three at the line.

In the championship game, once again North Clay came from behind with a 30-21 second half and a 16-10 final quarter to pull out a 54-52 victory over Wayne City.

Wayne City moved ahead 12-8 in the opening quarter and led 31-24 at halftime. Wayne City had three trifectas in that first half while the Cardinals had none.

Boose tallied seven points in the third quarter and the Cardinals had a 14-11 run to pull within 42-38 going into the final period.

That's when Fleener got untracked and connected on four field goals and two of two at the line for 10 points while Cody Zimdars and Boose nailed a three-pointer each. The Cardinals went on a 16-10 tear to pull out the victory.

Fleener finished with 25 points on 10 field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of four at the line. Boose chipped in with 14 points on six field goals, two of those three-poitners.

Fleener and Boose were named to the All-Tournament Team. The North Clay cheerleaders finished in second place in the cheer competition.

North Clay is now 8-4 on the season and stands at 2-0 in the National Trail Conference.

South Central earned ninth place in the tournament with a 55-36 win over Hamilton County Junior Varsity.

The Cougars ripped out to a 20-9 opening quarter lead on Hamilton County and led 30-18 at halftime. Aidan Dodson scored 14 first half points on six field goals and two of four at the line. Ethan Watwood scored seven points in the opening quarter run.

The Cougars had a 25-23 second half. Watwood added 11 points and finished with 18 for the contest. He hit eight field goals, two of those three-pointers. Leading the way was Dodson with 10 field goals and two of four at the line for 22 points.

Other Friday scores in the tournament were Crab Orchard 62, Edwards County (Albion) 47 and Wayne City 49, Lovejoy 46.

In other Saturday action, Cisne downed Lovejoy 59-52 for third place while Crab Orchard won over Webber Township (Bluford) 62-56 for fifth place. Gallatin County defeated Edwards County, 52-38 for seventh place and Sandoval beat Grayville, 82-75 for 11th place;
