Windsor/Stew-Stras Wins St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Crown

ST. ELMO -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed the championship of the 62nd Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Hatchets defeated Hillsboro, 70-58 to win the crown.

Austin Wittenberg went on an opening quarter run for the Hatchets to get them going in the right direction. Wittenberg connected on six field goals and two free throws for 14 of his team's 16 points and the Hatchets moved ahead 16-10. 

Wittenberg continued his run by hitting a field goal and was six of six at the line for eight of his team's 21 second quarter points as the Hatchets held a 37-25 halftime lead. Jordan Wittenberg contributed six points and Jackson Gurgel knocked in five points.

The Hiltoppers had only one quarter, the final, when they outscored WSS, 20-13. But that was way too late as WSS held a 57-38 lead going into the final period.

A. Wittenberg finished with 26 points on nine field goals and a perfect eight of eight at the line. J. Wittenberg added 20 points on seven field goals and six of eight at the line. The Hatchets finished with 19 of 24 free throws.

Windsor/Stew-Stras reached the championship game with a 58-54 win over Cumberland in Friday action.

Cumberland took a 17-15 opening quarter lead as Gavin Hendrix scored nine points while Maddox McElravy tallied six. The Pirates held that lead through halftime by a 30-25 count. Hendrix continued his hot scoring with 12 of the team's 13 points.

But Windsor/Stew-Stras started a comeback bid with a 13-10 third period as five players scored led by Dylan Curry with five points.

The Hatchets continued on their run with a 20-14 final period to pull out the four-point win. Curry knocked in two three-pointers while J. Wittenberg scored eight points, four coming from the free throw line. The Hatchets were eight of eight from the free throw line as Carter Chaney hit a basket and was two of two while A. Wittenberg added two of two.

A. Wittenberg finished with 17 points while J. Wittenberg added 15 and Curry 13.

Cumberland was led by Hendrix with 36 points on 16 field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of six at the line. Trevin Magee led in rebounds with nine while Campbell had five assists.

Cumberland dropped into the third place game and met St. Elmo/Brownstown. SEB ran off to a 22-11 opening quarter lead and went on for a 65-52 victory.

Jarrett Pasley and Adam Atwood scored six points each for SEB.

The lead went to 35-22 at halftime as Caleb Campbell added five points. SEB continued to remain in control with a 14-12 third quarter.

Cumberland came back with an 18-16 final period as Hendrix scored nine of his team's 18 points but it was too little.

SEB finished with three players in double figures. Atwood led with 21 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and 10 of 12 at the line. Campbell added 14 and Schaub 13. Atwood led in rebounds with nine and steals with two along with Pasley. Campbell had five assists.

Cumberland was led by Hendrix with 20 and M. McElravy with 10.

The consolation championship went to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Ramsey, 46-43.

The two teams played to a 17-17 opening quarter tie before Ramsey moved ahead 24-21 at halftime. Both teams scored 11 in the third quarter as Ramsey held a 35-32 lead going into the final quarter. 

CHBC then made its comeback with a 14-8 run to pull out the three-point victory.

Kaidyn Calame led the Bobcats with 16 points while AJ Radloff tallied 13.

Named to the All-Tournament First Team were Most Valuable Player Will Christian (Hillsboro),  Austin Wittenberg (WIndsor/Stew-Stras), Gavin Hendrix (Cumberland), Adam Atwood (St. Elmo/Brownstown) and Jordan Wittenberg (Windsor/Stew-Stras).

Named to the Second Team were Owen Landreth (Patoka/Odin), Nathan Matoush (Hillsboro), Caleb Campbell (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Kaidyn Calame (Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City) and Gunner Finley (Ramsey).

Cheerleading awards went to St. Elmo/Brownstown in first place and Mulberry Grove in second place.
