CHBC Wins, SEB Loses In Tourney, S. Central Wins At Conrad Allen Meet; EHS Falls To Charleston

ST. ELMO -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was a winner while St. Elmo/Brownstown susffered a tough loss at the 62nd Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

CHBC, playing to head into the consolation championship, was a 70-42 winner over Mulberry Grove. The Bobcats held a 16-10 opening quarter lead then had a big scoring second period for a 37-19 halftime tally.

The Bobcats finished strong with a 23-15 final period. Three players hit double digits. Clayton Wojcik led the way with 14 points while Kaidyn Calame and Trevor Thies scored 13 each. Wojcik hit six field goals and two of two at the line.

Top-seeded Hillsboro upset any plans St. Elmo/Brownstown had of winning its own tournament with a 59-57 victory.

The Hiltoppers went on a 19-14 opening quarter run and led 31-24 at halftime.

SEB came back with a 13-7 third quarter to pull within a point at 38-37. But  Hillsboro got back on track as Christian hit three baskets and was six of six at the line for 12 points while Matoush had three baskets and two free throws for nine points.

Jarrett Pasley was the big gun in the final quarter with six field goals that included two three-pointers and a free throw for 15 of the team's 20 points.

Hillsboro had a slight percentage lead in field goals connecting on 41 percent while SEB hit 36 percent. The Hiltoppers hit 64 percent from the free throw line with 16 of 25 and that's where the edge came as SEB hit nine of 17.

Tonight's games find Ramsey against Patoka/Odin in consolation bracket play at 6:15 followed by winner bracket action with  Cumberland and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg meeting at 7:45.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday with Mulberry Grave facing the loser of Ramsey vs. Patoka/Odin at 3 p.m. for seventh place followed by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City taking on the winner of that game fo the consy title at 4:30. St. Elmo/Brownstown will square off against the loser of the Cumberland vs. Windsor/Stew-Stras contest for third place at 6 p.m. followed by Hillsboro taking on the winner of that game for the championship at 7:30.

At Wayne City

South Central was an easy winner over Sandoval in Thursday's Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament.

The Cougars downed the Blackhawks by a 58-29 count. South Central held a 30-12 halftime lead as Ethan Watwood scored 10 points by halftime while Aiden Dodson added nine.

South Central then had a 16-9 third quarter as Dodson connected on five field goals for 10 points and the Cougars finished out strong in the final period.

Dodson tallied 19 points on nine field goals and a free throw while Watwood and Brody Markley tallied 10 points each.

In other games Thursday, Hamilton County JV won over Grayville, 64-46 and Webber Township (Bluford) beat Gallatin County, 56-38.

Tonighit's games feature Crab Orchard against Edwards County at 5:30, North Clay (Louisville) facing Cisne at 7 and Wayne City against Lovejoy at 8:30.

The tourney will come to a close Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. with the 11th place game and finishing out with the championship at 7 p.m.

At Charleston

Effingham traveled to Charleston and dropped an Apollo Conference contest to the homestanders by a 73-58 score Thursday.

The Trojans edged out to a 14-10 opening quarter lead. Most of the Hearts points came from three-point range as Garrett Wolfe hit two and Andrew Donaldson one.

Effingham then had a 19-17 second quarter to pull within 31-29 at halftime. Logan Heil tallied eight points while Wofle added six more points.

The Trojans then had a 19-14 third quarter to lead 50-43 and went on a 23-15 final quarter run behind 13 of 14 free throws and two three-pointers.

Wolfe attempted to keep the Hearts close in the final quarter with eight of the 15 points. He finished with 30 on 11 field goals that included five three-pointers, and was three of three at the line. Donaldson and Splechter tallied eight each.
