Wooden Shoes Down Bulldogs, Girls Roundup

Teutopolis ran out to an 11-2 opening quarter lead and went on for a 46-37 win over Effingham St. Anthony as the girls squads clashed Monday evening at the Enlow Center in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Wooden Shoes connected on four of 11 from the field and two of two at the line. Courtney Gibson hit a three-pointer while Emily Konkel connected on a basket and two free throws and Kaylee Niebrugge and Summer Wall a basket each.

The Bulldogs lone basket came from Stacie Vonderheide as the squad was cold from field, hitting on only one basket in seven attempts and missing two free throws.

Niebrugge got on a tear in the second quarter. After missing her first two baskets, she connected on four and scored eight of the Shoes' 13 points. T-town held a 24-9 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs finally got untracked in the third quarter with a 16-11 run as Vonderheide scored six points while Nancy Ruholl had a three-pointer and a free throw. St. Anthony had a 12-11 final period but it was too little after the Shoes first half lead.

Niebrugge finished with 22 points for the Shoes, hitting 10 of 16 from the field and two of two at the line. Also in double figures was Konkel with 11 on four of nine from the field and three of four at the line.

T-town pulled down 23 total rebounds with Niebrugge leading the way with 10 and Konkel adding six. Konkel led in steals with four and had two blocked shots. Taylor Bueker and Chloe Probst had one assist each.

St. Anthony had two players in double figures. Ruholl led the way with 12 points and five rebounds. She scored 10 of her total points in the second half. Lucy Fearday added 11 points on four of eight from the field and three of four at the line. She led in rebounds wiith six.

The loss was the first one for St. Anthony as the Bulldogs are now 10-1 on the season.

Teutopolis also has only one loss and stands at 7-1 on the season.

In the junior varsisty game, T-town claimed a 43-18 win. Isabelle Zerrusen led the way with 14 points. St. Anthony was led by Mady Hodge and Lily Gannaway with six points each.

At Altamont

Altamont trailed North Clay (Louisville) early in the game but came on strong in the final quarter to pull out a 51-45 victory Monday evening.

The Cardinals held a 13-5 opening quarter lead as Alexis VanDayke knocked in two three-pointers and Allison Czyzewski scored three baskets.

North Clay held a 23-19 halftime lead as Miah Ballard scored five for the Cardinals in the second quarter.

Grace Nelson hit only one three-pointer in the opening quarter for Altamont then tallied eight in the second period. She started a run in the third quarter as North Clay had a 13-12 edge to lead 36-31. Nelson connected on a basket and was five of five at the line for seven points and Claire Boehm hit a three-pointer and Kaylee Lurkins a basket.

Altamont then broke loose with a 20-9 final period to pull out the victory. Nelson went on a tear, scoring six field goals and four of six at the line for 16 points in the quarter.

Ballard led North Clay with seven of the nine final period points.

Nelson tallied 34 points on 11 field goals and 10 of 18 at the line. Lurkins contribued eight and Boehm seven.

The Cardinals were led by Ballard with 17 points and Czyzewski with 15.

At Newton

Newton stepped out to a 14-3 opening quarter lead and then had to hold off Salem to pull out a 40-38 victory Monday evening.

The Eagles led 27-23 going into the final quarter and the Wildcats came back with a 15-13 run only to fall short.

Two players scored in double figures for the winners. Lilly Kessler led the way with 15 points while Alexis Hetzer added 10. Hetzer pulled down 13 rebounds and Kessler 11. Aleah Higgs and Camryn Martin had four rebounds each. Elley Bennett led in assists with four. C. Martin and Addy O'Dell had four steals each.

Newton improved to 5-6 on the season and will host Teutopolis Thursday.

The Eagles also claimed the junior varsity game, 32-24. O'Dell led with 11 points and Peyton Willenborg added nine. Newton improved to 7-1.

Cumberland took the early lead and went on for a 45-29 victory over Decatur LSA Monday.

The Pirates held an 18-13 halftime lead and took off for the win.

Paige Dittamore led the Pirates with 13 points while Katelyn Shoemaker added 12.
