Sigel St. Michael, Advances To Eighth-Grade State Title Game; BSE To Play For Third

CLINTON -- Sigel St. Michael claimed two victories at the Class 8-1A State Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday and will now be playing for the state championship.

The Sharpshooters won over Peoria St. Vincent de Paul, 35-28 in the first game. Peoria edged out to a 7-4 opening quarter lead and led 15-12 at halftime.

St. Michael came roaring out on the court after halftime and outscored Peoria, 13-2 to lead 25-17 going into the final quarter and then held on for the victory.

Allisyn Kollmann led the way for St. Michael with 13 points while Kaelyn Ordner added eight.

In other first round games, Jerseyville St. Francis HG defeated Lockport Taft, 37-11; Lincoln West-Lincoln-Broadwell downed Kewanee Visitation, 46-26 and Ottawa Marquette won over Cissna Park, 26-14.

St. Michael then faced Jerseyville St. Francis HG and won 38-26. Once again the opposition took the early lead, going out to a 22-18 halftime tally.

The Sharpshooters then had a 6-1 third quarter to move ahead 24-23 and finished strong with a 14-3 run for the 38-26 victory.

Ordner again led the way, this time with 14 points. Cara Hatton and Kaylie Jordan added eight each.

In the other game, Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell tallied a 32-25 win over Ottawa Marquette.

St. Michael will face Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state championship. Jerseyville St. Francis HG will meet Ottawa Marquette at 6 p.m. for third place.

At Havana

Brownstown/St. Elmo captured an opening round victory at the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Havana High School Saturday.

BSE edged out to a 4-0 opening quarter lead on Peoria Christian and then had a 15-8 third period to finish with a 26-16 victory.

Dayana Haslett led the way in scoring for the winners with 13 points while Madi Miller added nine.

In other first round games, Mount Sterling Brown County edged Mount Pulaski, 29-28; Nokomis downed Colfax Ridgeview, 38-29 and Paris Crestwood pounded Bourbonnais St. George, 40-7.

Brownstown/St. Elmo then faced Paris Crestwood and fell by a 31-26 count.

Crestwood edged out to a 15-11 opening quarter lead and led 21-17 at halftime. Crestwood had a 10-9 second half.

D. Haslett was the lone player in double figures for BSE with 20.

In the other contest, Mount Sterling Brown County won over Nokomis, 44-28.

Mount Sterling Brown County and Paris Crestwood will meet for the state championship Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Brownstown/St. Elmo will face Nokomis at 6 p.m. for third place.
