SIGEL -- Dieterich captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

Dieterich downed Stewardson-Strasburg, 47-17.

In the third place contest, Neoga edged Effingham Sacred Heart, 22-21.

The consolation championship went to North Clay (Louisville) over South Central, 26-24.

 

At Mattoon

Effingham Junior High School picked up two wins over Mattoon in boys basketball competition Thursday. 

In the seventh-grade game, the Mustangs easily handled Mattoon by a 42-29 score. EJHS took a 16-4 opening quarter lead and had a 14-9 third period run.

Pals tallied 22 for ths winners while Kinkelaar added 10. Effingham is now 6-4 on the season.

In the eighth-grade game, Effingham came from behind in the fourth quarter to pull out a 35-34 victory.

Mattoon held a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 17-15 at halftime. The Mustangs had pulled within 26-25 going into the final quarter.

Braddy tallied 14 while Niebrugge added 11 for Efingham.

At Charleston

Teutopolis picked up two more victories in B game action Thursday.

In the seventh-grade contest, the Wooden Shoes won 36-12. T-town held an 18-7 halftime lead and had a 13-2 third period.

Tucker Dhom scored nine and Tyson Brooks eight for the winners.

In eighth-grade B play, T-town ripped out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and went on for a 44-32 win.

Hayden Tebbe scored 11 for the winners.

At Newton

Jasper County scored 51 points both times in downing Olney in seventh- and eighth-grade action Thursday.

In the seventh-grade encounter, Jasper County won 51-37. Jasper County ripped out to a 25-6 opening quarter lead.

Chance Mulvey tallied 18 while Maddox Homer added 10 for the winners. Homer led in rebounds. Jasper County improved to 11-1.

In the eighth-grade game, Jasper County was a 51-39 winner. Olney led 27-17 at halftime before Jasper County came back with a 34-12 second half run.

Hayden Mulvey led with 22 while Nolen Cleaver added 13. Jacob Oldham was the leading rebounder. Jasper County improved to 5-9.
