Sigel St. Michael Finishes Second At 7-1A State Tourney

ASSUMPTION -- Sigel St. Michael saw its bid for the Class 7-1A State GIrls Basketball Tournament championship fall apart in the final quarter in a 22-19 defeat by Washington St. Patrick Thursday at Assumption Central A&M Middle School.

The Sharpshooters held a 5-4 opening quarter lead and led 12-7 at halftime.

St. Patrick started a comeback bid in the third quarter with a slight 6-4 run to pull within 16-13. Then in the final quarter, St. Patrick continued its momentum with a 9-3 run and finished with the three-point victory.

St. Michael was led by Nora Bueker with 10 points. 

Kate McDougall led St. Patrick with 14 points.

St. Michael was led in scoring during the tournament by Kaelyn Ordner with 30, Brooklyn Will with 24, Bueker with 19 and Natalie Ballinger with 18.

The Sharpshooters finished the season with a 24-2 record. St. Patrick remained unbeaten and finished with a 28-0 record.

The third place game went to Ottawa Wallace with a 31-26 win over Peoria Limestone Walters.

In the Class 7-2A State Tournament, in which Altamont participated, the championship went to Havana over Liberty, 41-23. Liberty had beaten Altamont in opening round play. The third place contest went to Heyworth over Nokomis, 21-13.
