EHS Beats Mattoon, St. Anthony Downs CHBC

Effingham High School took the early lead and captured a 63-48 victory over Mattoon in boys high school Apollo Conference basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Hearts took a 10-5 opening quarter lead as Logan Heil went to work. Heil connected on four baskets and two free throws, scoring all of the Hearts points in the period.

In the second quarter 17-6 run, Garrett Wolfe scored five while Andrew Splechter, Jones and Heil scored four points each and the Hearts led 27-11 at halftime.

The Green Wave came back with an 18-13 third quarter run but still trailed by 11 going into the final quarter.

EHS got back on the scoring track with a 23-19 run as Wolfe and Andrew Donaldson tallied seven points each and Splechter contributed six and Gunnar Brown two free throws.

Heil and Wolfe led the way for the Hearts with 15 points each while Splechter chipped in with 14. Donaldson was on the edge of double figures with nine.

"The kids played hard," said Coach Obie Farmer. "We won the game on effort and energy. Mattoon went on a little run late in the game when we were up around 20."

At Cowden

Effingham St. Anthony put together some big scoring quarters in downing Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 69-25 in National Trail Conference action Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs ran off to a 20-6 opening quarter lead as Brock Fearday connected on four baskets and a free throw for nine points while Griffin Sehy added four baskets for eight points. Collin Westendorf chipped in with a three-pointer.

St. Anthony had a 25-8 second period to lead 45-14 at halftime. Westendorf led the way with nine points on three baskets and three free throws.

Westendorf continued his run in the third quarter with 12 points and finished with 24 to lead St. Anthony. Westendorf hit eight field goals, two from three-point range, and six of eight at the line. Fearday and Sehy chipped in with 15 points each.

CHBC was led by Thies with 10.

The Bulldogs claimed the junior varsity game, 72-5. Nick Ruholl led the way for St. Anthony with 17 points while Brady Hatton added nine. CHBC was led by Monnet with three points.
