TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School edged Taylorville, 60-57 in a rare Thursday boys basketball contest.

The Hearts and Tornadoes were tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter. Garrett Wolfe kept the Hearts in the opening frame by connecting on 11 of the 13 points. He hit four baskets that included two three-pointers and a free throw.

The Hearts then moved ahead 31-28 at halftime. Wolfe continued with four free throws and a basket while Andrew Donaldson had two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight.

But Taylorville came back with an 11-9 third quarter to pull within 40-39. The Hearts then finished with a 20-18 final period for the three-point winning margin.

In that third quarter, Logan Heil kept the Hearts in the contest hitting on three baskets and a free throw for seven of their nine points.

Wolfe tallied 24 points on seven field goals, three of those trifecta,s and was seven of seven at the line. Heil tallied 15 points on seven field goals and one free throw while Donaldson finished with 10 points.

"We played pretty poorly, but an ugly win is better than a pretty loss," said EHS Coach Obie Farmer. "Looking forward to fixing a lot of our mistakes and growing from this game. We will be in a better place when we get to play them at our place."
