North Clay Second, Dieterich Third at Cumberland Turkey Tourney

TOLEDO -- Casey-Westfield edged North Clay (Louisville) 55-54 to win the championship of the Cumberland Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Saturday.

The Warriors whipped out to a 20-11 opening quarter lead but North Clay came back with a 12-9 second period to trail 29-23 at halftime.

The Cardinals then had a 15-13 third quarter to pull within 42-38 going into the final period and had a 16-13 run but fell a point short.

Logan Fleener led North Clay with 28 points. He was the lone Cardinals player in double figures.

In the third place contest, Dieterich was a 49-46 winner over Cumberland.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 19-18 opening quarter lead behind Lucas Westendorf's seven points on two regular baskets and a three-pointer. Also knocking in three-pointers were Cole Will and Kaden Iffert.

The Pirates came back with a 9-4 second period to lead 27-23 at halftime. Four players scored for Cumberland.

But Dieterich came roaring back in the third quarter with a 16-7 run as Caleb Gephart cut loose with nine points and Westendorf with five more.

The Pirates had a 12-10 final period but couldn't make up that third quarter.

Dieterich was led by Westendorf with 18 points and Gephart with 14.

Cumberland was led by Gavin Hendrix with 18 and Trevin Magee and Maddox McElravy with 10 each.

Newton claimed fifth place with a 65-58 win over Okaw Valley.

Okaw Valley stepped out to a 22-13 opening quarter lead but the Eagles came back with a 20-9 second period to lead 33-31 at halftime. Okaw Valley then had a 16-12 third quarter to lead 47-45 going into the final period. Newton went on a 20-11 tear to pull out the win.

Caden Nichols led the way with 24 points for the winners while Dylan Gier added 16.

The seventh place contest went to Vandalia over Marshall, 81-52.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Gavin Hendrix (Cumberland), Lucas Westendorf (Dieterich), Parker Wolf (Newton), Caden Nichols (Newton), Jackson Parcel (Casey-Westfield), Caleb Gephardt (Dieterich), Jacob Clement (Casey-Westfield), Alex Boose (North Clay), Hudson Ruppert (Okaw Valley) and Most Valuable Player Logan Fleener (North Clay).
