Altamont Wins Bob Kerans Girls Thanksgiving Tourney

NEWTON -- Altamont High School captured the championship of the Bob Kerans Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Friday.

Altamont and Effingham squared off and the Indians came out with a two-point vcitory, 53-51.

Altamont held a 17-12 opening quarter lead but the Hearts came back with a 14-9 second period run to knot the score at 26-26 at halftime. Altamont regained momentum with a 14-7 third quarter to lead 40-33. Effingham mounted a comeback with an 18-13 run only to fall short.

Grace Nelson led the way for Altamont with 34 points connecting on 12 field goals that included five three-pointers and was five of five at the line.

Effingham was led by three players in double figures. Ella Niebrugge led the way as she hit six three-pointers for 18. Madison Mapes added 14 points and Marissa Allie 10.

In the other contest Friday, Newton tallied its first win of the meet over Flora, 47-40. Flora took a 23-19 halftime lead but the Eagles rallied with a 28-17 second half for the win.

Kessler led the way for Newton with 17 points while C. Martin added 13. Kessler led in rebounds with 17. C. Martin led in steals with six.

Altamont finished with a 3-0 record followed by Effingham 2-1, Newton 1-2 and Flora 0-3.
