T-town Second At Centralia, EHS Beats Dieterich, Girls Basketball Roundup

CENTRALIA -- Teutopolis High School finished second at the Centralia Girls Basketball Tournament during the weekend.

The Wooden Shoes had beaten Carterville 44-30 in a  Thursday contest.

In Saturday action, T-town won over Centralia, 46-32. The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 9-5 opening quarter lead then fell behind 22-20 at halftime.

T-town came out with an 11-6 third quarter run as Kaylee Niebrugge knocked in three baskets and was two of two at the line eight in the quarter. T-town continued its run with a 15-4 final period for the win.

Niebrugge led the way for the Shoes with 14 points while Emily Konkel chipped in with 10. Konkel led in rebounds with six. Niebrugge had six steals.

In the second game, Highland was a 31-28 winner over Teutopolis.

The two teams played to a 9-9 first quarter score. Highland edged out 14-13 at halftime. T-town still trailed by a point going into the final quarter and Highland came up with a 5-3 edge for the game.

Niebrugge tallied 11 as the lone double figure performer for the Shoes. Konkel and Courtney Gibson pulled down five rebounds each. Konkel led in steals with four.

Highland finished at 3-0 to claim the championship followed by Teutopolis at 2-1. The final score for Carterville and Centralia was not listed. Those two teams were third and fourth.

At Dieterich

Effingham opened the season with a 53-43 victory over Dieterich Friday.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 12-10 lead on EHS. Cortney Brummer and Miley Britton scored five points each for the Maroons.

EHS came roaring back with a 21-10 second period run behind Bria Beals with eight points while Averie Wolfe and Sidney Donaldson added four each.

The Hearts kept the pressure on in the third quarter with a 10-8 edge and held on for the victory. EHS had a big scoring edge at the free throw line. The Hearts hit 24 of 37 from the line with Mapes getting six of eight and Donaldson six of 12.

Three players hit double figures for the Hearts. Beals led the way with 17 points while Mapes added 11 and Donaldson 10.

Dieterich was led by Brummer and Kody Tegeler with 12  points each. The Maroons went to the line and hit only three of eight.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) handed South Central a 67-51 varsity loss Friday.

In the junior varsity game, North Clay was a 19-9 winner over the Cougars.

The Cardinals will be back in action today at Oblong.
