DIETERICH -- Dieterich Junior High School captured the championship of its own seventh-grade boys basketball tournament Tuesday.

Dieterich claimed the opening contest over Newton St. Thomas, 39-29. Dieterich edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and still led by one point at the half, 17-16.

In the second half, Dieterich had a 22-13 run for the 10-point victory.

Ben Schottman led the winners with 10 points.

St. Thomas was led by Fulton with 12 points.

In the second game, Newton St. Thomas was a 41-11 winner over Olney St. Joseph.

St. Thomas held a 15-1 opening quarter lead and led 26-5 at halftime.

Two players hit double figures for the winners. Fulton led with 15 while Bergbower added 14.

Dieterich then won the tournament championship by beating Olney St. Joseph, 56-23.

Dieterich ran off to a 22-8 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Bryce Bohnhoff scored 12 to lead 10 players in scoring. Mason Niemerg and Cooper Stortzum added eight each.

At Sigel

South Central came calling and picked up two victories over Sigel St. Michael Tuesday.

In the seventh-grade contest, South Central edged St. Michael, 29-27. South Central held an 18-16 halftime lead. The two teams then played to an 11-11 second half.

Aiden Hoover led the winners with 10 points while Colton Cartright tallied nine.

The Sharpshooters were led by T. Durdel with 12 and E. Fearday with 11.

In eighth-grade action, South Central won 40-27.

South Central led 9-0 after the opening quarter and 21-8 at halftime.

Three players finished in double figures for the winners. Luke Shumate tallied 14 while Westin Neilson and Sebastian Kruger added 11 each.

The Sharpshooters were led by Brandt Niebrugge with 15.
