SSW Wins NTC Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tourney

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed the championship of the NTC Eighth-Grade Touranment.

BEECHER CITY -- Second-seeded Brownstown/St. Elmo defeated fourth-seeded Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor in the championship game of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Satuday.

SSW took the first quarter lead, 10-6 behind Mya Friese's five points. SSW held that four-point lead at halftime, 18-14.

Brownstown/St. Elmo came out in the third quarter with a 13-6 run to pull ahead 27-24. Dayana Haslett scored nine of the 13 points in the quarter on three field goals and three of four at the line.

BSE kept the pressure on with an 8-7 final period for the 35-31 victory.

Haslett finished with 15 points while Maddie Miller tallied 12, six coming in the second period.

Stew-Stras/Windsor was led by Friese with 15 on six field goals and three of eight at the line.

In the third place contest, Sigel St. Michael was a 43-35 winner over Altamont..

St. Michael edged out to a 15-10 opening quarter lead and led 23-18 at halftime. St. Michael and Altamont played to a 10-10 third period but the Sharpshooters had a 10-7 final period for the eight point victory.

Two players hit double figures for St. Michael. Cara Hatton scored 14 points while Kailyn Gaddis added 12.

Altamont was led by Reagan Kuenstler with nine and Ella Nelson with eight.

In the consolation championship, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City defeated Dieterich, 23-15.

CHBC edged out to a 3-1 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back to move ahead 9-8 at halftime. The two teams scored four points in in the third period.

CHBC then had a 10-2 final period run behind Haley Doty's seven points and three free throws by Lena Bowlin. Doty finished with nine to lead the winners.

Dieterich was led by Elaina Manhart and Kinli Michl with four each.

In Friday's games, Dieterich was a 20-11 winner over North Clay. Dieterich held North Clay to two points in the opening half while taking a 15-2 lead.

Lena Goebel and Michl had five points each.

North Clay was led by Avery Romack and Brehea Russell with four each.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over Effingham Sacred Heart, 28-17.

CHBC took a 12-8 opening half lead then had a 16-9 second half run.

Haley Doty tallied 11 for the winners.

Sacred Heart was led by Mara Braun with 12.
