Basketball legend Bill Russell’s Number 6 will be retired across the NBA, it was announced Thursday, the first time that’s been done in the league.

Commissioner Adam Silver said of the Hall of Famer, “Bill Russell’s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honored in a unique and historic way.”

Players who now wear Number 6 can continue to do so. Russell died on July 31 at age 88.
