Bill Russell, a towering figure in American sports history, has died at the age of 88.

Russell led the Boston Celtics to 11 NBA titles and won the NBA’s most valuable player award five times.

In 1966, he became the team’s head coach, a first for an African American. Off the court, he was a civil rights activist, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and defending Muhammed Ali’s stance against the Vietnam War.

Russell was awarded the American Medal of Freedom in 2011.
