St. Anthony, Neoga To Meet For Girls Sectional Championship

TUSCOLA -- Effingham St. Anthony and Neoga, both members of the National Trail Conference, picked up victories at the Class 1A Tuscola Girls Basketball Sectional Tuesday evening and advance to meet each other in the championship game.

The Bulldogs opened the evening with a 53-45 win over Tri-County. St. Anthony held a 16-11 opening quarter lead as Riley Guy connected on three trifectas for nine points and Lucy Fearday scored six.

But Tri-County came back with an 8-3 second period to knot the score at 19-19 at halftime. St. Anthony then put on a small run in the third quarter to lead 35-31. Fearday scored half of the Bulldogs points with three field goals and two free throws.

In the final period, St. Anthony was in control with an 18-14 run. Guy led the way with eight points on a three-pointer, a regular basket and two free throws.

Fearday tallied 20 points to lead in scoring with seven field goals and six of nine at the line. Guy chipped in with 17 points on five field goals, four of those from three-point range, and three of five at the line.

Tri-County was led by Bella Dudley with 21 points.

In the second game, Neoga handed Tuscola a 41-34 loss.

The Indians edged out to a 13-10 opening quarter lead. Haylee Campbell led the way with six points while Trista Moore added five.

In the second quarter, both teams scored nine points and Neoga led 22-19 at halftime.

The game stayed close in the third quarter and Neoga held a 28-24 lead going into the final period. The Indians then had a 13-10 run for the victory.

There was even scoring for Neoga as Sydney Richards, Moore and Campbell finished with 12 points each. Richards hit five of nine from the field and two of six at the line while Campbell was six of 11 from the field and Moore was four of eight and two of three at the line.

Tuscola was led by Ella Boter with 11 points. The Warriors end the season with a 21-8 record.

St. Anthony advances to the championshp game with a 23-9 mark while Neoga stands at 26-7 overall. The pair square off at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional title and the right to advance to the Wayne City Super-Sectional Monday. The winner will meet either Goreville or Christopher. Those two will square off for the Sesser-Valier Sectional championship Thursday. Goreville downed Woodlawn, 60-38 while Christopher won over Junction Gallatin County 50-34 in Tuesday evening games.
