CASEY -- Effingham St. Anthony finished out regular season boys high school basketball play with a 70-62 victory over Casey-Westfield Friday evening.

 

The Bulldogs edged out to a 17-16 opening quarter lead as Craig Croy nailed five regular baskets for 10 points. Kyle Stewart then took over for the Bulldogs in the second period with 11 points and St. Anthony moved ahead 38-30 at halftime.

Casey-Westfield came back with a 17-14 third quarter run to pull within five points. But the Bulldogs had six players step forward in the final period with an 18-15 run for the victory.

Croy finished with 19 points to lead the Bulldogs while Stewart added 17, Griffin Sehy 13 and Adam Rudibaugh 12.

In junior varsity play, the Bulldogs won 81-58. Ryan Schmidt led with 25 points while Will Fearday added 14 and Michael Martelli with 12.

At Altamont

In the battle of two National Trail Conference teams, Altamont tallied a 51-45 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Friday.

The two teams played to a 12-12 opening quarter tie. Carter Chaney hit two three-pointers for the Hatchets.

WSS held a 22-19 halftime lead but Altamont carme roaring out in the third period with a 20-8 third quarter. Avery Jahraus and Tyler Robbins knocked in two three-pointers each. Then in the final period, WSS came back with a 15-12 lead but couldn't make up that third quarter run by the Indians. Altamont's Mason Robinson connected on six of six from the line while Robbins was two of three at the line in the final quarter.

Will Schultz led the way for Altamont with 14 points on six field goals, two of those three-pointers. Robinson added 13 and Robbins 10.

The Hatchets were led by Chaney with 18 and Austin Wittenberg with 16.

In the junior varsity contest, Altamont claimed a 66-29 win. Avery Jahraus had 25 points and Kienon Eirhrart 13 for the winners. WSS was led by Smith with eight.

At Cowden

St. Elmo/Brownstown took the early lead and went on for a 63-40 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Friday evening.

The Eagles had a 33-17 halftime lead and had a 30-23 second half run.

SEB connected on seven field goals, three each by Caleb Campbell and Jarrett Pasley while Gavyn Smith added one. The Eagles connected on 60 percent from the free throw line with six of 10.

Leading the way were four players in double figures. Caleb Campbell tallied 15 while Brady Maxey added 14, Jarrett Pasley 13 and Gavyn Smith10.

CHBC was led by Silas Buzzard with 13 and Kade Persinger with 10.

At Neoga

Newton High School edged Neoga, 43-41 in a Friday evening contest.

The Indians held an 8-7 opening quarter lead but Newton tied at the half, 19-19. Neoga moved ahead with a 10-7 third quarter but here came Newton with a 17-12 final quarter run to pull out the victory.

Parker Wolf was the lone Eagles player in double figures with 14. Newton ended regular season play at 18-9.

Neoga was led by Paci McClure with 24 points on seven field goals, four from three-pointer range and six of six at the line.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity win and finishes the season at 11-5.
