N. Clay, SEB, S. Central Nab Boys Wins; Hearts Lose To Rams

LOUISVILLE -- North Clay (Louisville) had five players hit double digits in a 70-63 victory over Dieterich in boys high school basketball Monday.

The Cardinals edged out to a 19-17 opening quarter lead as Dakota Weidner scored eight points and Brady Ingram six. North Clay held a 35-32 halftime lead.

Dieterich came roaring back with a 21-12 third period to move ahead 53-47 going into the final quarter. But North Clay regained the momentum with a 23-10 final quarter for the victory.

Leading the way was Ingram with 17 points on seven field goals, one of those a three-pointer and two of two at the line. Weidner chipped in with 15 while Logan Fleener, who scored only two points through the opening three quarters, went on a nine point run in the final period and finished with 11. Also with 11 were Bryton Griffy and Alex Boose. Griffy tallied six of his 11 points in the final quarter surge.

Dieterich was led by four players in double figures. Andrew Lidy and Pete Britton scored 15 each while Luke Westendorf added 13 and Bryce Budde 11.

The Movin' Maroons claimed the junior varsity game, 44-41.

At Louisville

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown was a 66-63 winner over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Monday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 17-15 opening quarter lead but CORL came back with a 19-16 second period to lead 34-33 at halftime. CORL then had an 18-14 third period to lead 52-47.

But here came SEB with a 19-11 final period to pull out the three-point victory. The Eagles connected on 52 percent from the field and 70 percent at the line. They hit eight of 11 three-pointers in the game.

Gavyn Smith led the way with 19 points on eight of 12 from the field and three of three at the line. Brady Maxey added 14 and Cade Schaub 13. Adam Atwood, Caleb Campbell and Josiah Maxey knocked in two three-pointers each.

Smith, B. Maxey and Schaub pulled down six rebounds each. B. Maxey led in assists with seven and steals with four. Campbell had one blocked shot.

At St. Elmo

At Bluford

South Central's Keenin Willshire had a stellar game as the Cougars defeated Webber Township (Bluford), 55-39 Monday evening.

Willshire connected for four points in the opening quarter then got better and better with eight in the second period and 10 in the third quarter. He finished with 12 field goals and two of two at the line for 26 points.

Aidan Dodson also finished in double figures with 14.

The Cougars held a 29-11 halftime lead and that was the contest.

South Central improved to 22-7 on the season.

The Cougars also nabbed the junior varsity win, 72-39.

At Bluford

At Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon handed Effingham a 56-37 loss in Monday evening action.

The Rams edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead and held that two-point lead at halftime, 23-21.

But, here came the fateful third quarter. Mount Vernon went on a 20-5 third period surge and led 43-26 going into the final period. The lone points for the Hearts in the third period were two baskets by Armando Estrada and Dalton Fox and a free throw from Ethan Ritz.

Mount Vernon had a 13-11 final quarter.

The Hearts were led by Garrett Wolfe and Ritz with eight points each.

Effingham drops to 9-20 on the season and will be back in action tonight at Moweaqua Central A&M.
