Teutopolis and St. Anthony were winners while Effingham lost at the 2022 Teutopolis Shootout Saturday at J.H. Griffin Gym. The three contests were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Teutopolis smashed Paxton-Buckley-Loda 55-20 in the nightcap of the four-game shootout, while St. Anthony downed Mattoon 50-40. Effingham saw Champaign Centennial score 39 points in the fourth quarter to down the Hearts 78-61 in the opening game of the Shootout. Jerseyville beat Robinson 64-44 in the other contest.

TEUTOPOLIS 55, P-B-L 20

The Wooden Shoes' defense won this one. Teutopolis held the Panthers to quarters of five, three, seven and five in posting their 21st win of the season. The second quarter was the difference maker as the Shoes outscored PBL 23-3 to lead 36-8 at halftime.

Teutopolis shot 49% from the field, 22 of 45, including 7 of 17 threes. The Shoes shot just six free throws, making four, and committed 14 turnovers. Paxton-Buckley-Loda shot 25% from the field, 8 of 32, including 3 of 15 threes. The Panthers shot just two free throws and made one. The Panthers turned the ball over 19 times. Teutopolis posted a whopping 32-11 rebound edge.

Teutopolis Coach Chet Reeder played everyone on the roster, but Brendan Niebrugge led the Shoes with 16 points, making four threes. Mitch Althoff grabbed seven rebounds. Max Niebrugge had five assists.

Bradon Knight and Griffin Johnson each scored five points for PBL.

ST. ANTHONY 50, MATTOON 40

This was an interesting game.

St. Anthony held a narrow 10-9 edge after one quarter, but the Bulldogs outscored the Green Wave 17-2 in the second quarter to lead 27-11 at halftime. Mattoon went 0 for 11 from the field in the period.

The third quarter was a different story, as Mattoon scored the first 16 points of the period and ended outscoring the Bulldogs 23-11 in the period. St. Anthony fought back, though, and led 38-34 heading for the fourth quarter. St. Anthony held Mattoon to six points in the period to post the 10-point win.

St. Anthony shot 38% from the field, 15 of 39, including 8 of 15 threes. The Bulldogs made 12 of 16 foul shots, grabbed 20 rebounds and turned the ball over just nine times.

Matttoon also made 38% of its shots, 16 of 42, including 4 of 24 threes. The Green Wave made four of just five free throws, pulled down 16 rebounds, and committed just eight turnovers. Mattoon made 10 of 12 shots in the third quarter, but just 6 of 30 shots for the rest of the game.

Griffin Sehy led St. Anthony with 15 points, making five threes. Collin Westendorf came off the bench to score 13 points and Adam Rudibaugh scored 10 points.

Sam Bradbury led Mattoon with 14 points.

St. Anthony improved to 16-12 while Mattoon is now 14-15 on the season.

CHAMPAIGN CENTENNIAL 78, EFFINGHAM 61

The 39-point fourth quarter was more than the Hearts could handle. Effingham began the final period with a 42-39 lead before Centennial doubled its point total. It's especially frustrating since the 61 points scored by the Hearts is one of their highest point totals of the season.

Centennial led 13-12 after one quarter and 24-23 at halftime before Effingham posted a 19-15 third quarter edge to lead by three heading into the fateful final quarter.

Centennial shot 46% from the field, 28 of 61, including 8 of 20 threes, but the Chargers made 13 of 18 shots in the final period including 4 of 6 threes. The Chargers made 13 of 20 free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds and turned the ball over 10 times.

Effingham shot 44% from the field, 24 of 54, including 4 of 21 threes. The Hearts made 9 of 10 free throws, grabbed 30 rebounds but turned the ball over 20 times.

Garrett Wolfe led Effingham with 24 points on 9 of 19 shooting. Brayden Pals, who made his return from injury in Friday night's game at Lincoln, added 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting. Armando Estrada was also in double figures with 11 points.

Effingham is now 9-19 on the season, while Champaign Centennial improved to 15-10.
