MOUNT ZION -- Effingham High School exploded in the second half to hand Mount Zion a 52-30 loss in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday.

The Hearts edged out to a 9-5 opening quarter lead but went 0-for-12 in the second period and the Braves held a 10-9 halftime lead.

EHS then went on a tear, outscoring the Braves 21-9 in the third period as Madison Mapes knocked in three trifectas. EHS had a 22-1 final quarter as Mapes added seven more points and Meredith Schaefer put in two three-pointers.

The Hearts had two players hit double digits in the contest. Mapes tallied 16 points while Schaefer scored 14.

EHS improved to 20-10 on the season. The Hearts host a Class 3A regional Monday and will face Olney at 7:30 p.m. The opener pits Mount Vernon against Charleston at 6.

At Newton

Effingham St. Anthony finished regular season play with a 63-31 victory over Newton Thursday.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead and led 26-16 at halftime. The Bulldogs then had a 37-15 second half.

Lucy Fearday provided the scoring punch with 32 points on 14 field goals and four of eight at the line. She also pulled down 11 rebounds and had four steals. Fearday is only seven points away from 1,000 points in her career and could reach that level during regional action.

Also in double figures was Abbi Hatton with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Newton was led by Elle Bennett with eight. Alexis Hetzer and Ava Kessler pulled down six rebounds each while Bennett had five. The Eagles finish the regular season with an 11-18 record. The Eagles will compete in the Class 2A Marshall Regional against Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville at 1 p.m. Saturday.

St. Anthony finished as co-champions in the National Trail Conference with a 7-1 record and stand at 20-9 overall. The Bulldogs will compete in the Class 1A Cumberland Regional and take on either Dieterich or Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. Monday. Those two teams meet Saturday.

In the junior varsity contest, Newton edged St. Anthony, 26-25. Newton was led by Karasayn Martin with nine and Emma Nadler with eight and ended the season with a 13-3 record. St. Anthony was led by Stacie Vonderheide with 11.

At Toledo

Cumberland High School reached a goal that hasn't been reached by a girls Pirates basketball team since the 2009-10 season.

The Pirates handed Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond a 51-41 loss Thursday evening and that pushed them into a 20-9 record for the season. The last time a Cumberland girls squad reached 20 wins was during the 2009-10 season when the team went 25-5. Since then, the most wins a Cumberland girls squad has reached is 18 in the 2010-11 season.

Coach Sammi James' teams won a grand total of 20 games in her first five years at the helm. James and her squads have turned the corner. James, the daughter of Seth James, a long time girls basketball coach in the Neoga school district, is also the junior high coach at Cumberland and coaches fourth/fifth grade girls traveling teams.

The Pirates held a 27-17 halftime lead and then held off ALAH for the 10-point victory.

Zoe Mitchell led the way for Cumberland with 14 points while Katelyn Shoemaker added 13.

Cumberland plays host to a regional beginning Saturday. In the opener Dieterich faces Casey-Westfield at 1 p.m. while Cumberland meets Martinsville at 4 p.m.

At Neoga

Neoga High School improved to 23-7 on the season with a 48-41 win over Arcola Thursday evening.

The Indians trailed Arcola 8-7 after the opening quarter but moved ahead 25-23 at halftime. Neoga then had a 16-7 third period run.

Sydney Richards led the way for Neoga with 23 points on 10 field goals and three of four at the line. Haylee Campbell chipped in with 10 points.

Neoga is back in action Monday at the Altamont Regional. The Indians drew the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of Brownstown/St. Elmo vs. North Clay at 6 p.m. Monday.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City pounded Ramsey to the tune of 68-19 Thursday evening.

The Bobcats ripped out to a 25-2 opening quarter lead and led 44-7 at halftime.

Gracie Heckert led the way with 28 points for the Bobcats. She connected on 12 field goals, two of those three-pointers, and was two of two at the line. Also in double figures were Lani Morrison with 16 and Macee Rodman with 11. Heckert had a triple/double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Morrison added nine rebounds and six assists. Heckert had five assists.

Ramsey claimed the junior varsity game, 43-37. CHBC was led by Birgen Schlanser with 12.

South Central picked up a non-conference win over Sandoval Thursday, 69-49

Sandoval held an 18-13 opening quarter lead but the Cougars came back to move ahead 30-28 at halftime. South Central then had a 39-21 second half.

Taegan Webster led three players in double figures with 18 points while Brooklyn Garrett added 15 and Kaitlyn Swift 11.

South Central finished out the regular season and will now head into the Class 1A Altamont Regional and face Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Teutopolis played host to Fairfield and sent the Mules home with a 54-45 loss Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held a 27-20 halftime lead. Fairfield came back to move within 37-36 going into the final quarter. T-town then got back on a roll with a 17-9 final period.

Three players hit double figures for the Shoes. Zoe Cremens led the way with 14 points while Kaylee Niebrugge added 12 and Emily Konkel 10.

Kaitlyn Schumacher led in rebounds with eight while Niebrugge had six. Isabella Hardiek led in steals with four.
