Lady Hearts Post 19th Win; Other Wednesday Scores

The Effingham Lady Hearts picked up their 19th win of the season Wednesday, defeating Olney Richland County 52-45. 

Effingham edged out to a narrow 14-13 lead after one quarter, then outscored the Lady Tigers 16-9 in the second period to take a 30-22 halftime lead. 

The Hearts pushed the lead to 12 after three quarters, outscoring Olney 13-9 in the period to lead 43-31. Olney outscored the Hearts 14-9 in the fourth quarterm but Effingham claimed the seven-point victory.

Meredith Schaefer led the way for Effingham, scoring 20 points on seven of 11 shooting including three threes. Also for Effingham: Ella Niebrugge 9, Sawyer Althoff and Marissa Allie 7 each, Madison Mapes 6, Coralin Ohnesorge 2, and Saige Althoff 1. 

Burgener with 14 points and Ingram with 11 points led Olney Richland County.

Effingham improved to 19-10 on the season, and are right back in action tonight. The Lady Hearts travel to Mt. Zion for Apollo Conference action.

Neoga defeated Dieterich 55-45 Wednesday night in National Trail Conference girls action.

Neoga was led by Sydney Richards with 16 points, Haylee Campbell with 15 points, and Sydney Hakman with 14 points. Also for Neoga: Avery Fearday 5, Allison Worman and Trista Moore 2 each, and Brynn Richards 1. 

For Dieterich, Kaitlyn Boerngen led with 15 points and Cortney Brummer with 14 points. Also for Dieterich: Eva Meinhart 9, Madilyn Brummer 3, and Miley Britton and Ruby Westendorf 2 each.

Neoga improved to 22-7 on the season, and will face Arcola tonight in Neoga's Senior Night game.

In the area's lone boys varsity action Wednesday, Newton defeated Lawrenceville 57-44.

The Eagles got out of the gate with a 12-6 first quarter lead and led throughout the contest. 

Parker Wolf led the way for Newton with 16 points, while Evan Schafer added 14 points and Ben Meinhart 11 points. Also for Newton: Mason Schafer 9, Weston Tharp 5, and Dylan Gier 2. 

Bryant Jenkins had a big night for Lawrenceville, scoring 26 points. 

Newton improved to 16-8 on the season. The Eagles are back in action Friday night, hosting Olney Richland County.
