St. A Beats S. Central; EHS Falls To Charleston, Area Boys Roundup

FARINA -- Effingham St. Anthony's Craig Croy put together a10-point opening quarter as the Bulldogs took an 18-11 lead and went on for a 54-42 National Trail Conference boys basketball victory over South Central Tuesday evening.

Croy knocked in two three-pointers and two regular baskets while Griffin Sehy hit two three-pointers in that opening period. South Central came back with a 13-7 second quarter run to pull within 25-24 at halftime. But the Bulldogs got back on track with a 12-6 third period and finished out strong with a 17-12 final quarter, again with Croy scoring 10 points.

Croy tallied 23 points on nine field goals, five of those three-pointers. St. Anthony improved to 4-3 in the conference, 19-7 overall.

Two players scored in double figures for the Cougars. Aidan Dodson led with 13 while Ethan Watwood added 12.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest, 33-22. Ryan Schmidt led with 19 points. South Central was led by Max Magnus with eight.

At Charleston

Effingham suffered an Apollo Conference loss at the hands of Charleston, 57-46 on a game heard on 979XFM. Tuesday.

The Trojans edged out to a 16-14 opening quarter lead and led 28-24 at halftime. Charleston then had a 29-22 second half.

Effingham had two players in double figures. The Hearts were led by Garrett Wolfe with 20 points on eight field goals, three trifectas and three of four at the line. Ethan Ritz chipped in with 18 points on seven of 13 from the field with three trifectas.

The Hearts dropped to 1-9 in the conference, 9-17 overall. Charleston improved to 7-3 in the conference and 15-9 overall.

At Altamont

Altamont took the early lead and never relented in a 51-39 National Trail Conference win over Neoga Tuesday.

Altamont held a 15-9 opening quarter lead as five players scored and led 25-16 at halftime. Avery Jahraus contributed two three-pointers in that quarter.

Noah Klimpel led the way with 12 points for Altamont while Eric Kollmann added 11. Altamont is now 4-1 in the NTC, 21-5 overall.

Neoga was led by Paci McClure with 13 and Brady Reynolds with 12.

In junior varsity play, Altamont won 58-38. Wyatt Phillips scored 12 and Dillan Elam 11 for Altamont. Leading Neoga was Quintin Richards with 16.

At Toledo

Four players scored in double figures for Cumberland as the Pirates handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 68-61 non-conference loss Tuesday evening.

Wiley Peters led the Pirates with 19 points while Gavin Hendrix added 15, Jaxon Boldt 12 and Maddox McElravy 10. Hendrix pulled down 15 rebounds while Boldt had 12. Travin Magee led in assists with four and steals with four.

Cumberland ran off to a 16-5 opening quarter lead but St. Elmo/Brownstown came back with a 20-12 second period to pull within 28-25 at halftime. Cumberland then had an 18-12 third period and finished out strong from the free throw line in the final quarter that gave ithe Pirates the winning margin. The Eagles dropped to 12-14 on the season.

The Pirates connected on 24 of 38 free throws in the contest, 12 in the final period for 63 percent.

SEB was 19 of 34 from the line for 55 percent. The Eagles were led by Brady Maxey with 22 points, Jarrett Pasley with 15 and Caleb Campbell with 11. Maxey had six rebounds. Pasley and Caleb Campbell had two assists and three steals each. Cade Schaub had two blocked shots.

Teutopolis picked up a 56-48 victory over Casey-Westfield Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held a 15-11 opening quarter lead and led 23-21 at halftime. T-town then put on its scoring shoes with a 38-27 second half run.

Caleb Siemer led the Wooden Shoes with 13 points while Max Niebrugge added 12. Brendan Niebrugge chipped in with nine points.

T-town now sports a 20-7 record.

Dieterich fell to Martinsvile, 57-56 in overtime Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup.

The Movin' Maroons held a 14-7 opening quarter lead as Andrew Lidy connected for eight points. Dieterich held a 27-16 halftime lead and led 34-25 going into the final quarter. But Martinsville mounted a 19-10 final period to knot the score at 44-44, sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime session, the Bluestreaks connected on four baskets that included a three-pointer and four free throws for a 13-12 edge and the win.

Dieterich was led by Pete Britton and Lidy with 16 points each.

Olney ripped out to a 21-8 opening quarter lead and led 38-18 at halftime. North Clay had a 30-28 second half but couldn't get over that opening quarter run by the Tigers.

Logan Fleener was the lone Cardinal in double figures with 21 on seven field goals and five of six at the line.
