Mattoon Edges EHS, Newton, WSS Nab Boys Wins

The game was close from the get-go but Mattoon pulled out a 41-39 boys basketball win over Effingham as two Apollo Conference teams met Monday evening. The contest was heard on 979 XFM.

The Hearts edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead but Mattoon came back with a 12-9 second period to lead 19-17 at halftime. The Green Wave's Christian Larson scored seven of his team's 12 points in the period.

EHS came back after halftime and moved ahead 33-24 with a 16- 5 run. Armando Estrada scored five points while Ethan Ritz added four and Andrew Donaldson connected on a three-pointer.

But that was short-lived. The Green Wave rallied in the final period, putting together a 17-6 run to pull out the victory. Gage Thompson hit two three-pointers and Blaine Powers scored six points.

The only scoring the Hearts got was all six points from Garrett Wolfe.

Mattoon was led by Larson with 12 points. Effingham was led by Estrada with 13.

Mattoon improves to 14-12 while Effingham drops to 9-16.

At Ramsey

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg  stepped out to a 15-6 opening quarter lead, led 40-18 at halftime and went on for a 66-33 drubbing of Ramsey in non-conference play Monday.

The Hatchets connected on eight three-pointers in the contest. Austin Wittenberg led the way with three trifectas and finished with 18 points. He hit a total of nine field goals and was three of four at the line. Samuel Vonderheide connected on eight field goals, two of those three-pointers, and was three of four at the line for 17. 

WSS finished with 18 of 23 free throws while Ramsey had three of six. The Hatchets continued their outstanding season and now sport a 21-5 record.

The Hatchets also claimed the junior varsity game, 49-29. Stew-Stras will host Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Friday.

At Marshall

Newton held off Marshall in the final quarter and pulled out a 58-57 victory Monday evening.

The Eagles held a 16-13 opening quarter lead and led 24-21 at hafltime. The Eagles had a 22-19 third period run and led 46-40 going into the final quarter. Marshall made a comeback bid only to fall short.

Mason Schafer was the lone player in double figures for Newton with 14. Caden Nichols and Dylan Gier had nine each.

The Eagles improved to 4-1 in the Little Illini Conference, 15-8 overall and return to action Wednesday playing host to Lawrenceville.
