SEB Wins NTC Tournament Opener

ALTAMONT -- St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed the opening round victory over Cowden-Beecher City, 55-35 at the National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening at Altamont High School.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead on SEB as four players scored in the contest. The Bobcats held a 25-21 halftime lead as five players contributed.

But SEB came back with a 13-4 third quarter surge to pull ahead 34-29 and finished out strong with a 21-6 final quarter.

The Eagles connected on 19 of 44 field goals for 43 percent and 15 of 22 free throws for 68 percent. CHBC connected on only 31 percent from the field.

Caleb Campbell hit seven of 14 from the field for 15 points while Brady Maxey tallied 12. Gavyn Smith, Adam Atwood and Jarrett Pasley scored eight each.

Smith pulled down eight rebounds and Cade Schaub had seven. B. Maxey had three steals and Smith had two assists.

CHBC was led by Silas Buzzard with 10 points while Clayton Wojcik had eight.

St. Elmo/Brownstown advances to a 6:15 meeting tonight against top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony. The other contest tonight features North Clay (Louisville) against Dieterich at around 7:45 p.m.

CHBC drops into the consolation bracket and will meet the loser of the Altamont vs. Neoga contest at 5 p.m. Thursday.
