Effingham St. Anthony and Effingham squared off for the championship of the James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In Thursday's games leading up to the Saturday final, St. Anthony defeated Salem 40-29.

The Bullpups held a 23-8 halftime lead and never looked back.

St. Anthony was led by A. Laurtizen with 13 and K. Griffith and C. Pennington scored eight points each.

Effingham then picked up a 47-34 win over Aviston.

The Mustangs ripped out to a 13-2 opening quarter lead and led 23-9 at halftime.

Cannon Bockhorn and Nolan Fearday scored 13 points each while Cole Phillips added 12.

In the championship game, St. Anthony tallied a 44-33 victory.

Effingham held a 7-6 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony ripped off to a 12-7 second period to lead 18-14 at halftime.

The Bullpups held a 29-24 lead going into the final period then had a 15-9 final quarter.

H. Brent led the way with 17 points while K. Griffith added 14 for the winners.

Effingham was led by Bockhorn with 13 and Nolan Fearday with nine.

At Hutsonville

In a Thursday contest, Jasper County won the seventh-grade contest, 40-13, taking a 19-5 opening half lead over Palestine/Hutsonville

Jasper County was led by Haden Mulvey with 11 and Nolan Cleaver with 10. The seventh-graders improve to 10-10.

In eighth-grade action, Hutsonville/Palestine picked up a 39-36 victory. Hutsonville/Palestine took a 20-19 opening half lead. Jasper County came back to move ahead with a10-6 third period but Hutsonville/Palestine had a 13-7 final quarter.

David Ferguson was the lone Jasper County player in double figures with 15.

Class 1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

In opening round play of the Sacred Heart Regional Saturday, Kansas handed Martinsville a 38-18 loss in the opener.

In the second game, Newton St. Thomas easily handled Windsor, 44-4.

Kansas will now face top-seeded Effingham Sacred Heart Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In the second contest, second-seeded Sigel St. Michael will meet Newton St. Thomas at 7:15.

 

Class 2A Effingham St. Anthony Regional

St. Elmo/Brownstown and Dieterich were winners in the St. Anthony Regional Saturday.

St. Elmo/Brownstown edged North Clay (Louisville) 32-28.

In the second contest, Dieterich downed Altamont 34-27.

St. Elmo/Brownstown now faces top-seeded South Central at 6 p.m. today while Dieterich takes on No. 2  St. Anthony at 7:15.

 

Class 2A Assumption Central A&M Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City edged Nokomis 25-20 in the first game of the Assumption Central A&M Regional Saturday.

In the second contest, Kincaid South Fork won over Findlay Okaw Valley, 24-9.

CHBC will face top-seeded Assumption Central A&M at 6 p.m. today while Kincaid South Fork takes on No. 2 Stewardson-Strasburg at 7:15.

 

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Neoga faced Oblong in the opening game of the Casey-Westfield Regional Saturday and was a 34-28 winner.

In the second contest, Arcola blasted Hutsonville/Palestine, 47-8.

Neoga faces top-seeded  Casey-Westfield at 6:30 p.m. today.

Arcola takes on second-seeded Paris Crestwood at 7:30.

 

Class 3A Teutopolis Regional

Robinson Nuttall defeated Lawrenceville Parkview in the opener at Teutopolis Saturday, 38-32.

In the second game, Cumberland downed Marshall 51-16.

The third game went to Jasper County over Red HIll (Bridgeport), 39-32.

Jasper County trailed Red Hill 5-2 after the first quarter but knotted the score at halftime 15-15. Jasper County then had a 22-16 second half for the win.

Hayden Mulvey scored 15 and Logan Burgener 11 for the winners.Jasper County is 11-10.

Robinson meets top-seeded Teutopolis today at 6 p.m. followed by Cumberland taking on Jasper County at 7:15.

Class 4A Taylorville Regional

Effingham saw its season come to a close with a 30-13 loss to Mount Zion Saturday in the Taylorville Regional.

The second contest went to Rochester over Stephen Decatur 47-23. Mattoon defeated Taylorville 47-32 in the third game.

Mount Zion then defeated top-seeded Charleston 32-27 while Rochester won over Mattoon 42-26.

Mount Zion meets Rochester at 6 p.m. today for the regional championship.
