EHS Claims Vandalia Girls Title, T-town Fifth At Highland, C'land Fourth At Lincoln Prairie Meet

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School finished out with a 51-44 victory over Mascoutah Friday to capture the championship of the Vandalia Mid-Winter Girls Basketball Tournament.
Hearts ended the tourney with a 4-0 record followed by Centralia 3-1, Mascoutah 2-2, Greenville 1-3 and Vandalia 0-4.
The Hearts trailed Mascoutah 14-8 after the opening quarter but came back to take a 27-21 halftime lead. Mascoutah pulled within 37-36 going into the final period. EHS then had a 14-8 final quarter as Meredith Schaefer nailed two three-pointers and Ella Niebrugge knocked in a three-pointer and two free throws.
Niebrugge finished with 20 to lead the Hearts while Schaefer added 16.
Schaefer was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Highland Tournament
Teutopolis High School captured fifth place at the 35th Annual Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Tournament Saturday.
The Wooden Shoes defeated Breese Mater Dei, 36-26. T-town edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead and led 20-13 at halftime. The Shoes then had a 16-13 second half.
Courtney Gibson led T-town with 10 points while Isabella Hardiek and Zoe Cremens scored nine each. Cremens hit three trifectas. Hardiek and Emily Konkel pulled down five rebounds each. Kaitlyn Schumacher had three steals. Cremens, Hardiek and Grace Tegeler had one assist each.
Bethalto Civic Memorial won the championship by defeating Okawville, 53-47. Third place went to O'Fallon over Alton, 58-50. The consolation championship was claimed by Collinsville over Nashville, 57-39.

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament
Cumberland dropped a contest to Cerro Gordo/Bement, 49-31 in the third place contest at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.
CGB had a big scoring first half and the Pirates couldn't come back from it. CGB held a 30-8 lead at the half.
Cumberland came back with a 23-19 second half but too late.
The Pirates were led by Abbie Becker with nine points and Sage Carr with eight.
