GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony were easy winners in opening round play of the James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Monday.

St. Anthony bounced Staunton 47-13 to open the tourney.

The Bullpups ripped out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead and led 31-4 at halftime.

A. Lauritzen tallied 14 for the winners while H. Brent added 13 and C. Pennington 10.

In the second game, Salem edged Triad 36-35.

Effingham pounded Hillsboro 56-6.

The Mustangs held a 21-0 opening quarter lead and led 31-4 at halftime.

Effingham was led by Cole Phillips with 10 and Wyatt Hayes with 10. Thirteen players contributed points for the Mustangs.

In the final game of the day, Aviston easily won over Greenville 51-29.

Tuesday games feature Staunton against Triad at 6 p.m. followed by Hillsboro taking on Greenville at 7 in consolation bracket action.

Thursday games have St. Anthony meeting Salem at 6 p.m. followed by Effingham taking on Aviston at 7 in winner bracket action.

The finals are scheduled for Friday.

National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Tournament

In winner bracket action Monday at the NTC Eighth-Grade Tournament, North  Clay (Louisville) downed Sigel St. Michael, 52-27.

In the second game, Dieterich edged Stewardson-Strasburg, 24-20.

Stew-Stras held a 4-3 opening quarter lead and led 11-10 at halftime. Stew-Stras added to its lead with a 7-4 third period for an 18-14 lead.

But, Dieterich came back with a 10-2 final period to pull out the victory.

B. Niemerg and Hall led the winners with seven points each.

Stew-Stras was led by Sayers with seven points and drops to 12-8 on the season.

North Clay will meet Dieterich at 8 p.m. Thursday for the NTC championship. St. Michael will face Stewardson-Strasburg at 6:45 for third place.

Tonight's games feature South Central against Effingham Sacred Heart at 6:15 followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown taking on Altamont at 7:30 in consolation bracket action. The winners advance to the consolation championship Friday at 5:30 p.m.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis claimed two victories over Taylorville in junior high action Monday.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade encounter 37-18. T-town stepped out to a 21-10 halftime lead and had a 16-8 second half.

Jake Kocher and Carson Cornell led the winners with eight points each.

In the eighth-grade matchup, T-town easily won 50-18.

T-town held a 7-6 opening quarter lead and led 17-14 at halftime. The Shoes then had a 20-2 third quarter.

Gavin Addis led the way for the Shoes with 15 points while Jason Kreke added 11. T-town made seven three-point field goals in the game as Addis had three, Landyn Thoele three for nine points and Gavin Buening one.

At Newton

Flora came calling and picked up both seventh- and eighth-grade wins over Jasper County Monday.

In the seventh-grade contest, Flora won 40-37. Jasper County held a 22-16 halftime lead but Flora came back with a 24-15 second half run.

Nolan Cleaver led Jasper County with nine points. Jasper County dropped to 9-10.

In the eighth-grade game, Flora was a 36-32 winner. Flora ran off to a 17-6 opening quarter lead then held on for the win.

David Ferguson led Jasper County with 16 points. Jasper County fell to 6-12.

At Newton
