St. Anthony Edges Neoga; EHS Downs Newton

NEOGA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School took the early lead then had to hold on for a 50-44 National Trail Conference boys basketball victory over Neoga Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs had a 14-5 opening quarter run led by Kyle Stewart's seven points. But Neoga came back on three trifectas by Quintin Richards to pull within 23-20 at halftime.

Both teams came out cold in the third quarter as St. Anthony had a 7-5 edge to lead 30-25 going into the final period.

Then the two teams went on scoring runs but the Bulldogs had a 20-19 edge to take the six-point win. Adam Rudibaugh led the way for the Bulldogs with eight points while Dontye Perry knocked in two three-pointers.

Both teams hit well from the free throw line in the final quarter. St. Anthony was 13 of 20 while Neoga was eight of 10.

Rudibaugh led the Bulldogs with 18 points while Stewart added 14. Max Koenig and Brock Fearday contributed nine each.

Neoga was led by Richards with 15 and Paci McClure with 13. Perry added nine. The Indians finished with nine three-pointers in the contest while St. Anthony hit one.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in the National Trail Conference, 10-8 overall. Neoga dropped to 2-3 in the conference, 11-6 overall.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony won 45-29. Michael Martelli led the winners with 16 points while Collin Westendorf added 14. Neoga was led by Richards with 10.

In freshman action, St. Anthony won 25-19. Aiden Braunecker had seven for St. Anthony while Neoga was led by Trey Sheehan with six.

At Newton

Effingham High School ran off to a 20-7 opening quarter lead and handed Newton a 64-36 non-conference loss Tuesday evening.

The Hearts held a 38-19 halftime lead then had a 20-8 third period.

Four players hit double figures for the Hearts. Jett Volpi led the way withi 19 points while Garrett Wolfe, Ethan Ritz and Brayden Pals tallied 12 each in even scoring. The Hearts knocked in 11 three-pointers in the game led by Volpi with five, Ritz with three and Wolfe with two.

Newton was led by Parker Wolf with nine points. Newton had two three-pointers. The Eagles drop to 12-5 on the season and return to action Friday hosting Lawrenceville.

Effingham has a quick turnaround with an Apollo Conference contest at Taylorville Thursday.
