St. A Wins Over Robinson, Olney Downs EHS

ROBINSON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School took the early lead then held off Robinson in double overtime for a 79-72 non-conference victory Tuesday in boys basketball.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead as Griffin Sehy hit two three-pointers. St. Anthony led 28-24 at halftime. Sehy scored seven of those 16 points while Kyle Stewart put in a three-pointer and Colton Fearday tallied five.

The Maroons came back with a 13-10 third period to pull within a point. Robinson then had a final 13-12 fourth quarter to knot the score, sending the game into overtime. Cooper Loll scored seven in the third period and eight in the final quarter as he hit three baskets and was nine of 10 at the line.

In the first overtime session, both teams scored 12 points. The Bulldogs then pulled out the victory in the second overtime with a 17-10 run. St. Anthony hit 16 of 16 at the line in the two overtime periods while Robinson was nine of 12.

Sehy and Stewart provided the one-two scoring punch for the Bulldogs with 26 and 24 points respectively. Also in double figures were Brock Fearday with 12 and Max Koenig with 11.

There were 67 free throws shot in the contest between the two teams. St. Anthony hit 29 of 35 while Robinson was 26 of 32.

St. Anthony fell in the junior varsity game 61-40. The Bulldogs were led by Ryan Schmidt with nine points.

The Bulldogs claimed the freshman/sophomore game, 48-35. Will Fearday scored 12, Aiden Braunecker 11 and Nick Ruholl 10 for St. Anthony.

At Effingham

The first half was Effingham's but the second half went Olney's way as the Hearts fell 41-37 in a non-conference boys high school basketball matchup heard on 979 XFM Tuesday evening.

Ethan Ritz got the Hearts off in the right direction by nailing two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 points in the opening 13-6 lead. Garrett Wolfe nailed a three-pointer in the quarter.

In the second period, Braydon Pals scored six points and the Hearts held a 23-19 halftime lead.

But things started going wrong in the third period as the Tigers had a 13-7 run to lead 32-30. Olney continued on with a 9-7 final period for the four point victory.

Ritz was the lone player in double figures with 15 for the Hearts. But EHS played the unbeaten Olney close. The Tigers improved to 15-0.

Effingham dropped to 4-11 on the season.
