T-town Wins Charleston Girls Tourney, EHS Third; St. A Fifth, Altamont, Sixth, T-town JV Seventh At Mattoon

The Wooden Shoes defeated Effingham, 49-30 and won over Tri-County 68-44 to finish with a 3-0 record. Tri-County was second at 2-1, Effingham third at 1-2 and Charleston fourth at 0-3.
The Wooden Shoes opened with the win over Effingham. T-town held an 11-5 opening quarter lead and led 23-16 at halftime then had a 26-14 second half.
Kaitlyn Schumacher led the way in scoring for the Shoes with 11 points. Leading the way in rebounding was Emily Konkel with 10 while Schumacher had seven. Schumacher led in steals with three. Konkel led in assists with two.
Effingham was led by Ella Niebrugge with eight points and Madison Mapes with seven.
Teutopolis then turned right around in the next game to defeat Tri-County 68-44. The two teams came in with 2-0 records.
The Shoes took the early lead and never looked back with a 31-15 halftime score and leading 50-32 going into the final quarter.
Four players hit double figures for the Shoes. Leading the way was Schumacher with 16 points while Hardiek and Niebrugge had 14 each and Konkel finished with 10. Schumacher pulled down seven rebounds while Zoe Cremens and Hardiek had five each. Schumacher led in steals with three. Grace Tegeler had four assists.
In the final game of the tournament, Effingham was a 66-23 winner over Charleston.
The Hearts trailed Charleston 17-10 after the opening quarter but got on a scoring run with a 34-5 second period and that was the contest.
In that quarter, Meredith Schaefer knocked in two three-pointers, three regular baskets and a free throw for 13 points. Schaefer finished with 18 points while Niebrugge and Sawyer Althoff added nine each.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were T-town's Kaitlyn Schumacher, Kaylee Niebrugge, Emily Konkel and Isabella Hardiek, Effingham's Meredith Schaefer, Sawyer Althoff and Ella Niebrugge and Tri-County's Bella Dudley, Caroline Smith and Kaylin Williams.

Mattoon Holiday Tournament
Effingham St. Anthony finished fifth, Altamont sixth and Teutopolis junior varsity seventh at the Mattoon Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Wednesday.
St. Anthony defeated Altamont 60-53. The Bulldogs held a 14-11 opening quarter lead but Altamont came back with a 19-16 second period run to tie the score at 30-30 at halftime. In the run, Grace Nelson tallied seven points while Peyton Osteen and Kylie Osteen scored five each.
But the Bulldogs mounted a comeback with a 14-9 third period behind Abbi Hatton's six points and two baskets by Lucy Fearday to lead 44-39 going into the final quarter. In the final period, the Bulldogs had a 16-14 edge, connecting on four baskets and eight of 10 free throws.
Fearday tallied 21 points to lead the way in scoring with eight field goals and five of 11 at the line. Hatton chipped in with while Riley Guy added 10.
Altamont was led by Nelson with 28 points on seven field goals and 14 of 16 at the line. Also in double figures was P. Osteen with 13.
In the seventh place contest, Teutopolis junior varsity outscored Decatur Eisenhower 68-45.
Eisenhower held an 11-9 opening quarter lead but T-town came roaring back with a 24-15 second period and never looked back.
Probst and Zerrusen scored 21 points each for the winners while Bueker added nine.
In the championship, Mattoon defeated Mahomet-Seymour 48-43. The third place contest went to Galesburg over Olney 61-34.
Named to the All-Tournament Team from St. Anthony was Lucy Fearday and honorable mention went to Riley Guy and Abbi Hatton. No other information on the All-Tournament Team was provided.
