WSS To Play For Tri-County Title; Neoga In Third Place Game at Monticello, Altamont Wins At Sesser-Valier, Cumberland Splits At Vandalia

KANSAS -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg captured two victories Tuesday in the Tri-County Holiday Tournament and will now play for the championship today.

The Hatchets claimed the first contest easily by a 73-23 score over Chrisman.

Windsor/Stew-Stras ran off to a 16-1 opening quarter lead and led 36-11 at halftime.

Two players scored in double digits for the Hatchets. Samuel Vonderheide led the way with 21 points while Landon Miller chipped in with 12.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stew-Stras again took an early lead and downed Tri-County, 58-27.

The Hatchets led 12-6 after the first quarter and 32-13 at halftime.

Austin Wittenberg led the way knocking in nine field goals that included five three-pointers and was three of four at the line for 26 points. Miller added 15 points while Vonderheide chipped in with 12.

Windsor/Stew-Stras is now 13-2 on the season and will face Paris for the championship today at 7:30 p.m.

In other scores Tuesday, Paris defeated Argenta-Oreana 62-33, Westville won over Martinsville 44-40, Tri-County downed Deland Weldon 53-30, Argenta-Oreana defeated Martinsville 61-48, Paris downed Westville 56-41 and Christman won over Deland Weldon 55-21.

Martinsville will meet Deland Weldon for seventh place at 3 p.m., Argenta-Oreana will take on Chrisman at 4:30 for fifth place and Westville faces Tri-County at 6 for third place.

Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament

Altamont advanced to the final four of the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament Tuesday.

The Indians defeated Marissa-Coulterville 60-31. Altamont stepped out to a 16-7 opening quarter lead as Mason Robinson went on a tear connecting on four field goals that included one three-pointer for nine points.

In the second period, the Indians had a 15-5 run to lead 31-12 at halftime. Avery Jahraus knocked in five points in the quarter.

Altamont had a 29-19 second half.

Robinson finished with 13 points to lead the winners while Will Schutlz and Eric Kollmann added nine points each as 11 players scored in the contest.

In other games in the winners bracket, Christopher won over Johnston City 46-33, Cobden beat Goreville 71-69 and Sesser-Vallier defeated Red Bud 52-38. In consolation bracket action, Sparta downed Century 71-40, New Athens won over Galatia 62-42, Waltonville edged Zeigler-Royalton 55-52 and Thompsonville easily handled Elverado 61-25.

Altamont will now meet Sesser-Valier at 8 p.m. today for the right to advance to the championship game against either Christopher or Cobden. Those two teams meet at 1:30 p.m.

Monticello Holiday Hoopla

Neoga captured a victory Tuesday at the Monticello Holiday Hoopla Tournament.

The Indians defeated Clinton 64-41. No other information was provided. Neoga will play for third place today at 3:30 p.m. against Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

In other games Tuesday, Tuscola defeated Colfax Ridgeview 62-38, Paxton-Buckley-Loda won over Oakwood 41-30, Monticello downed Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 67-34, Oakwood defeated Colfax Ridgeview 59-48 and Tuscola edged Paxton-Buckley-Loda 58-57.

Clinton will face Ridgeview at 10 a.m. for seventh place while GCMS will take on Oakwood at 11:30 for fifth place. Neoga meets Paxton-Buckley-Loda for third and Monticello faces Tuscola at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.

 

Vandalia Holiday Tournament

Cumberland High School picked up a win and suffered a loss at the 49th Annual First National Bank Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday.

In the first game of the day, Cumberland went overtime before beating host Vandalia, 67-60.

The Pirates took a 14-9 opening quarter lead on Vandalia and led 24-19 at halftime. But here came the Vandals. In the third quarter, Vandalia went on a run with a 20-12 edge to lead 39-36 going into the final quarter. Cumberland came back with a 19-16 score to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In the overtime period, Cumberland put together 12 points to outrun Vandalia with a 12-5 tally and take the 67-60 victory.

Jaxon Boldt led the way for the Pirates with 24 points on nine field goals that included three trifectas and three of four at the line. Also in double figures was Trevin Magee with 16.

The Teutopolis junior varsity handed Okaw Valley a 51-44 loss. No other information was provided.

Cumberland fell to Meridian, 76-54. The Pirates held a 15-8 opening quarter lead and led by six at halftime. But Meridian came back with a 20-17 third period and outscored the Pirates 25-10 in the final period to pull out the win.

Cumberland was led by Boldt with 19 points and Gavin Hendrix with 13.

In other games, Flora edged Shelbyville 34-31, Pana won over Father McGivney 65-52, Vandalia downed Okaw Valley 62-44 and Nokomis won over Flora 46-41.

Teutopolis junior varsity will face Vandalia at 12:30 p.m. today while Cumberland takes on T-town JV at 5 p.m.
