St. A, Altamont To Play For Third At Mattoon; EHS Falls At Charleston, Neoga To Play For Title At Monticello In Girls Tourneys

MATTOON -- Altamont and Effingham St. Anthony will play for fifth place at the 42nd Annual Mattoon Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament while the Teutopolis junior varsity team will play for seventh place.

In the opening game Tuesday, Teutopolis junior varsity handed Decatur Eisenhower a 61-41 loss.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 33-18 first half lead and led 53-29 going into the final period.

T-town had three players finish in double figures. Katie Kremer led the way with 16 points while Probst added 15 and Summer Wall 12.

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Galesburg, 57-33. Galesburg stepped out to a 10-4 opening quarter lead and led 25-11 at halftime.

The major problem for the Bulldogs was Kiarra Kilgore who tallied 22 points on 10 field goals. Two other players scored in double figures for the winners.

St. Anthony was led by Lucy Fearday with 13 on three field goals and five of six at the line. She hit two three-pointers.

Olney tallied a 53-25 victory over Altamont. The Tigers held a 15-5 opening quarter lead and led 34-10 at halftime. Altamont tallied five points each in the first three quarters before finishing with 10 in the final quarter.

Grace Nelson led the way with 15 points.

In the other contest, Mattoon edged Mahomet-Seymour, 52-49.

In pool play, Altamont squared off against Teutopolis junior varsity and picked up a 50-46 victory.

T-town took a 9-3 opening quarter lead and led 22-17 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes still held the lead, 30-26 going into the final period. Altamont's Grace Nelson, who had been held to eight points in the first half and six in the third period, broke free.

Nelson nailed four three-pointers, a regular basket and was three of six at the line for 19 of the team's 24 points. Peyton Osteen also hit her third three-pointer of the contest and the Indians pulled out a 50-46 win.

 St. Anthony trounced Decatur Eisenhower 70-31 in the next contest.

The Bulldogs ripped out to a 24-9 opening quarter lead as Riley Guy hit three trifectas and a free throw for 10 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs held a 42-17 halftime lead and led 56-21 going into the final period.

Fearday led the way for St. Anthony with 18 points while Guy added 16 and Abbi Hatton 13. The Bulldogs connected on on 20 of 31 free throws.

The final pool contest saw Mattoon demolish Olney, 73-28.

Charleston Holiday Tournament

Teutopolis picked up an opening round victory while Effingham suffered a loss in the Charleston Round Robin Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes opened the tourney by trouncing Charleston 57-11. T-town took an 18-4 opening quarter lead and led 38-5 at halftime and the game was over.

Three players hit double figures for the Shoes. Emily Konkel led the way with 16 points while Kaitlyn Schumacher scored 15 and Isabella Hardiek had 13. Schumacher also pulled down 15 rebounds, had two steals and an assist. Tegeler led in assitss with three. Konkel had five steals while Hardiek and Grace Tegeler had four each.

In the second game, Effingham fell victim to Tri-County, 47-43.

The Hearts trailed 17-13 after the opening quarter but came back with a 14-2 second period surge as Meredith Schaefer hit two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight and Sawyer Althoff nailed all four of her free throw attempts and the Hearts moved ahead 27-19 at halftime.

Tri-County took a two-point lead going into the final quarter with a 16-6 third period run. The squad then finished out with a 12-10 final quarter.

EHS was led by Schaefer with 19 points on eight field goals that included three trifectas. Niebrugge added 11.

In the other contest, Tri-County won over Charleston, 58-24.

Today's games include T-town against Effingham at 2 p.m., T-town taking on Tri-County at 4 and Charleston against Effingham at 6.

Monticello Holiday Hoopla

Neoga was a winner in its lone game Tuesday at the Monticello Sages Holiday Hoopla.

The Indians trailed Clinton 12-11 after the first quarter and 20-16 at halftime. Neoga had a 10-3 third period run and finished strong with a 9-3 final quarter for the 35-26 win.

Avery Fearday led the way for Neoga with 17 points on six field goals and five of 11 at the line.

Neoga improved to 13-2 on the season and will play for the championship today at 6 p.m. against Tuscola.

In other games Tuesday, Paxton-Buckley-Loda defeated Stark County 46-35, Tuscola won over Colfax Ridgeview 46-33, Monticello downed Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 47-11, Tuscola beat Paxton-Buckley-Loda 40-19 and Colfax Ridgeview bounced Stark County 50-17.

Today's games included GCMS against Stark County at 10 a.m., Paxton-Buckley-Loda taking on Monticello for fifth place at 11:30, Ridgeview against Clinton at 2 for third place and Neoga facing Tuscola for the title.
