S. Central Meets CHBC For Dieterich Girls Title, Takes On Dieterich For Boys Crown

DIETERICH -- The finals are set for the Dieterich Holiday Tournaments, both boys and girls after action Tuesday.

In the girls tourney, in the opening game of the day, North Clay (Louisville) downed Brownstown/St. Elmo, 52-42.

The Cardinals edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead as Miah Ballard tallied five points. The lead went to 25-18 at halftime. Both teams scored nine points in the third quarter. North Clay finished out with an 18-15 final period. Ballard tacked on three more baskets and three free throws in the period for nine and finished with 16 for the game.

Also in double figures for North Clay was A. Czyzenski with 14.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Audrey Wilhour with 12 and Laney Baldrige with 10.

In the second game, Arcola defeated Casey-Westfield, 54-12.

The third contest went to Newton over North Clay (Louisville), 49-41. The Eagles held a 13-7 opening quarter lead but North Clay came back in the second period to pull within 18-16 at halftime. Newton then had a 31-25 second half.

The Eagles were led by two players in double figures. Camryn Martin tallied 11 while Ava Kessler added 10.

North Clay was led by Alexis VanDyke with 12, Miah Ballard with 11 and Allison Czyzewski with 10.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City then defeated Arcola 64-53. The Bobcats had a 14-7 second period run to lead 33-23 at halftime. The two teams played to a 31-31 second half.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the winners with 29 points on eight field goals that included four three-pointers and was nine of 10 at the line. Also in double figures were Madison Wojcik with 13 and Lani Morrison with 10.

In the fifth game, South Central won over Newton, 45-36. The Cougars moved ahead 14-8 in the opening quarter and led 24-21 at halftime. South Central had a 21-15 second half run.

Brooklyn Garrett led the way with 14 points on three field goals and eight of 14 at the line. Laney Webster added 12 on three field goals that included two trifectas and four of 11 at the line.

Newton was led by Camryn Martin with 13 points.

In the final game of the day, CHBC edged Dieterich 56-50. The Movin' Maroons took a 17-6 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with a 16-8 second period run to trail only 25-22 at hafltime. The Bobcats then had an 18-10 third period to move ahead and outscored Dieterich 16-15 in the final quarter.

Lani Morrison led the way with 24 points on seven field goals and 10 of 16 at the line. Heckert chipped in with 17.

Dieterich was led by Kaitlyn Boerngen with 19 on seven field goals that included three triectas and two free throws. Madilyn Brummer added 11 points and Ruby Westendorf 10.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will meet South Central for the championship at 6 p.m. Dieterich willt take on Newton at 4 for third place. North Clay faces Arcola at 2:30 for fifth place and Brownstown/St. Elmo squares off against Casey-Westfield at 1 for seventh place.

In the boys tourney, Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville edged Patoka, 60-56 in the first game. The second contest went to Red Hill (Bridgeport) over Sullivan, 44-38.

In the third game, South Central downed Patoka, 65-43. The Cougars ran off to a 22-9 opening quarter lead.

Keenin Willshire and Spencer Johannes provided the one-two scoring punch for the Cougars with 18 points each. London Hails chipped in with 10.

Arcola won over Sullivan in the fourth game, 42-35.

South Central then came back with another victory, this one over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City by a 65-32 count.

The Cougars held a 36-18 halftime lead. Aidan Dodson scored 19 for the winners on seven field goals that included two three-pointers and three of four at the line. Also in double figures were Johannes with 14 and Willshire with 10.

CHBC was led by Jaden Robertson with 11.

In the final game of the day, Dieterich edged Arcola in overtime, 61-60.

Arcola took a 7-6 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back to lead 21-20 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons had a 19-16 third period to lead 40-36 but Arcola came back with an 18-14 final period to knot the score. In the overtime period, Dieterich had a 7-6 edge.

Dieterich had four players hit double figures. Bryce Budde led the way with 15 while Luke Westendorf had 13, Caleb Gephart 12 and Andrew Lidy 10.

Today's games will have Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville against Sullivan at 1 p.m. for seventh place, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meeting Arcola at 2:30 for fifth place. Patoka/Odin takes on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 4 for third place. South Central and Dieterich square off for the championship at 8 p.m.
