Cumberland Claims Second Win At ALAH Girls Tourney

ARTHUR -- Cumberland High School picked up its second victory at the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights Holiday Girls Basketball Classic Wednesday evening.

The Pirates defeated Shelbyville, 46-38. Cumberland edged out to a 12-9 opening quarter lead as Sage Carr hit two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight.

In the second period, the Pirates had a 10-6 run to lead 22-15 at halftime. This time around Zoe Mitchell scored three baskets for six points.

Shelbyville made the contest interesting with a 15-11 third quarter run to pull within three going into the final period. But Cumberland got its scoring shoes back on and had a 13-8 final period.

Mitchell finished with 16 to lead the Pirates while Carr added 10.

In other games, Mount Zion downed Flanagan-Cornell, 63-41 and ALAH won over Sullivan, 52-25. WIndsor/Stewardson-Strasburg was to play Chrisman but Chrisman pulled out of the tourney before it started.

Today's games feature Mount Zion against Cumberland at 10 a.m. in the New Gym, Shelbyville facing Flanagan-Cornell at 11:30 a.m. in the New Gym and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against Sullivan in the Old Gym.

The final session will be determined by the first three games of the day. At 3 p.m. the fourth place teams play for seventh place at 3 p.m. in the Old Gym. Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond junior varsity will be one of those teams in place of Chrisman. The fith place game will be at 3 p.m. in the New Gym, the third place game will be at 4:30 in the Old Gym and the championship will be at 4:30 p.m. in the New Gym.
